The E core

A color scheme I was working on yesterday. I used Blue Smoke Pearl colorant from MF I think and a tiny bit of 2X Blue for the outer color and shot an Indigo core.
It's not quite what I was shooting for but it looks good on the little Thump Grub.   I am trying to mimic the colors of the little Sheephead in the river here. I would say %80 of the walleyes I catch have baby Sheepheads in their stomachs. The sheepehed here have a grayish bluish pearly like color on the belly and a darker blue/black top color. I'm not totally satisfied with this color so the search will go on.



They really pop using the  flash on my phones camera.



I did some bugs ( Mayflies ) too yesterday. Nothing even close to as cool as the ones Mike made but they look alright for my first try. You'll notice that not all the tails fully formed. I think I need to shoot the plastic a little hotter and warm my mold a little more before E coring this mold. This color is an ES Motor Oil and 2X Watermelon Brown with a tiny bit of .40 and .15 Black glitter tossed in. It makes a nice bug body color IMO.

Tried my hand at the E-Core today. I found a problem with the method. It is totally addictive. I can't stop thinking of new colors to try. I didn't want to drive 22 miles to Menards, so I went to our local True Value to get the rods. They didn't have brass so I bought plain steel 1/8" rod. I polished it up a bit with 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper and coated with worm oil. Worked very well. I really like this technique of doing two color baits. Simple, and very dramatic results. With the 3" grub mold I tried the method with that would have worked perfect ctom. I am going to try that with some other molds next time.

It was too windy to fish so I worked on an Electric Blue color yesterday. Figured I would do some E core baits while I was at it. The core color gives some of these baits a pearl look to them which is kind of cool. I really need to figure out how to take better pictures. LOL

Bored ? No. Unable to fish because of the weather ? Yes !  LOL  I went fishing Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Would have gone yesterday and today too but the wind put the screws to that plan. It's a steady 20 mph wind gusting to 40 right now and it's supposed to be worse tomorrow.

Lots of lightning and wind late last night and I'm pretty sure we had storm warnings after I went to bed around midnight. They said we had winds pushing 50 mph but not a lot of rain and no property damage reports to speak of. Take away the wind and it would be a beautiful sunny day today.

I love those clear, glitter bodies with the E-core! I can see I'm going to spend many days pouring those if it ever gets warm.

Those clear bodies are the way to go with the E core. The pictures don't do those baits any justice at all. These two baits are really easy to E core. The pins for the grub mold take a little grinding to get them to fit the mold just right but that too is pretty easy to do with a bench grinder.

I have done E core baits in solid colors but it's much easier to shoot some tails in one color then come back and shoot the body in a different color.
