Rain maybe?
« on: 06/28/19 10:08 UTC »
We had one hellacious thunderstorm that lasted from 11:30 last night until 4:30 this morning. Non-stop. 4 to 8 inches of rain locally. I was up at 6 to check the rain gauge and ready my rain monitor, then take a look at the river and stream behind our home. The river was showing just a hint of higher water while the stream looked about normal for having had rain.

At 8:10  Carole and I ran some errands and I took this picture just before leaving. I took this snap from our back yard looking out over the park land on the other side of the stream.

Taken at 9:45 this morning from the same spot in the yard, this is what the park looked like and the water is still coming up fast.  Compare the green on the rip rap of the river in the distance in the first picture to the second. That'll give a good idea of how much rise had happened in that short span of time.

Our home and yard are well elevated above the creek and the river's high water mark so we are not in any danger, but this is a great example of how the flood control program the city uses will gather water and move it out of the area in a fast fashion. After seeing how much high water is still flowing in outlying areas of town I don't think the rise is over yet so this day might be a fun one. All the idiots in town will be in the park right behind us watching the water flow and it never ceases to amaze me just how dumb of things they do when the water is wild like this. Seen some very close calls.

Rain like this combined with our hills and mountains in West Virginia equals total disaster. The last state wide rain we had like what you’ve described was back in 1985 or the “85” flood. I remember seeing the nation guard landing helicopters with aid. I also recall my parents and I driving over to Parsons.  Boulders the size of campers laid strewn about as if moved without effort. And probably the most iconic of all pictures

Iconic indeed. Our local news yesterday was full of video clips of a herd of cows being swept away by flood waters just west of Rochester. Some have been found alive but many haven't been located yet. Highway 52, the corridor to Minneapolis/St.Paul , was closed yesterday and will likely be closed until sometime Sunday. Right here in town we have seen several streets closed due to river water leaving its banks. Many surrounding smaller communities have taken serious hits again. Many of these small towns are saying that this event is worse than the 2010 event which was a super bad one.

I don't care where one lives, when 8" of rain gets dumped in 4-6 hours in areas where the ground is already pretty much saturated, nothing good will come of it. The water has come down in the park behind us but now it looks like a lake bed with the water drained off it and its starting to smell just that way too. Next will come the flies.

We've had the last few days being dry here. First time all spring. Our normal has been one day a week dry the rest rain. It's been pretty much get your yard work in when you can all year long.

We're almost 14" ahead of the annual average rainfall for here right now and we are supposed to get another round of severe weather this afternoon....with lots of rain.

I drove through Pine Island Friday night.  The amount of flooding was incredible, quite a site.

Please send some rain my way asap.
Been way too hot and dry here in Alaska.
Wildfires are going off like crazy due to lightning strikes.
The biggest fire is in the wildlife refuge and so they are letting it burn into the refuge per refuge policy.
Over 70,000 acres as of today.
Fortunately it's 15+ miles from my house.
But lots of smaller fires here and there statewide.
No campfires allowed for the fourth of July holiday.

The first picture in this post is what I saw again this morning at 6. Here we are at 7:30 AM.....again.

I dumped just over 1.5" again at 6 but flood warnings are flying in areas west and south of Rochester again so substantially more rain had to have fallen in those areas but no idea how much yet.

Cascade Creek flows immediately behind or yard entering the pictures from the right and under the walking bridge. Its really moving this morning. Really moving. Lots of dirt in it this time and way more debris as compared to a week ago.

While we're in no danger here [much, much higher ground] all this rain is getting old. Right now we're maybe 16" ahead of the annual average for rainfall. Very possibly more. A bit of drought here would be fine right about now. I can always water the garden and grass.

I just got my rainfall update for the areas west and south of here....2.5" to 5" in about an hour and a half time frame on saturated ground.
