The venerable old Fuzzy Grub
« on: 02/18/22 15:46 UTC »
For years and years the timeless Fuzzy Grub was a staple in just about every Walleye and Crappie anglers' tackle boxes. After decades of loyal use it slowly got replaced with other and newer tackle innovations until now you cannot hardly even remember the people who used it or even find one in a store. Sitting in a local bait shop the other day Fuzzy Grubs were brought up. A day later a buddy made mention of them. I always seemed to catch something with them and thought" what the heck, make up a bunch of these jewels and get them in the tackle pail so you have them when the ice departs.

I used the Crappie Fluke mold to create the bodies in both purple and junebug. After trimming the tales off the bodies, I used simple sewing thread and a needle to make the pulling loops as seen in the picture. Using Do-It's Blood Quill Marabou, Do-It's pearl Flashabou Accent and Do-It's pearl Flashabou I simply puled the feather and flash butts back into the body 1/2" and snipped the thread off at the front of the body. Easy, peasy.... instant Fuzzy Grub.

I have the Marabou in the fluorescent yellow, hot pink and fluorescent orange.... the only colors one needs really. The flash I have in gold, silver, pearl and rainbow. The Accent I have in pearl and silver. With both the accent and the flash, I use only 4 strands about 2" long. On average I can do 4 complete bodies with one marabou feather. In any case here, the product goes a super long way.

One of my favorite ways to fish the Fuzzy Grub for Crappies was to use a 1/16 head on a #6 hook and douse the feathers with cod-liver oil or some other commercial scent concoction. There weren't
Gulp or PowerBait juices around when the Fuzzies were in vogue but I'm thinking the Gulp juice will fire these new one up just fine. Back in the 70's cod-liver oils reigned supreme when using the grubs. For people that cannot get past using bait a small minnow or a waxie or two serves well as an attractant.

What with all the color options a person has in his injection arsenal and a minimal investment in some feather and flash a person can make untold color combinations. The good old Fuzzy Grub. Bring'em back and join the party!

I have Jacob's mold to make them. Haven't used it in many years; might have to get it out and make some! I've been fly tying, making jigs and airbrushing blanks; so I have all the supplies to make them all ready!
