Katana Craw too thick?
« on: 10/06/25 17:56 UTC »
I really want to purchase this mold, but I keep hesitating because the body seems ridiculously thick. If I was going to fish it standard ned style, I don't think it would matter, but every body of water I fish is full of grass and the weedless ned hooks don't look promising when it comes to hook-up ratio. Can anyone confirm that a standard 2/0 or 3/0 EWG hook rigged texas style would work? Will the hook be too large for the length of the bait?

I really wish they would slim down the body of this bait by ~25%.

Assuming your talking about the smaller of the two K kraws.  I don't have the bigger one.  The smaller ones is great.  The fish around here love it.  I have the ES version.  I'm not sure about Texas rigs on that hook, but I'm sure you can find a hook set up that works for that bait.

As for the weedless ned I don't have any issues with it.  I use that hook in a few molds now and like them.

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it.

I am talking about the original smaller version. I'm looking at the ES XL 3" 5 cavity mold. It's good to hear a first-hand account of the weedless ned not having hook-up problems. I'm in Canada, so I know the size and look of the bait will work out well, but I was just a little hesitant about the body thickness since I have to "blind buy" the mold.

Has anyone used this bait on a Z-MAN NedlockZ EWG Jig Head? If so, how did it work out for you?

I have both sizes and the picture just makes the bait appear to be really bulky, but it's not that bad at all. The wide gap jig you show will fish it just fine.

The regular, smaller sized Katana does well with a skirt. The larger I fish on a weedless midwest finesse head. The worm nose head works nicely too. The head weight sort of depends on current and maybe wind on some days. I love plopping the big Katana on a jig right down where rip rap meets mud or where weeds have a defined edge.

I use it as a jig trailer and it works great. The only issue I have with it is the claws pop off easily. But you need the action to catch the fish so it's a trade off. I just save the old one and remelt them into new ones.

Lamar since using it as a jig trailer could you not shoot it in hard plastic or a 50/50 mix of medium to hard & keep the claws from coming off? May be worth a try. I shoot my tubes in a  50/50 mix & they work great,  but in straight medium they're way to easy to tear just setting the hook one time.

I guess you could. A lot of fishing is having confidence in what you're doing. In my head if I knew those claws weren't moving as freely as they could it would throw my whole game off. Just me and my OCD.
