Jig head like hack attack jig head
« on: 11/15/13 15:48 UTC »
I am looking for a jig mold similar to the Strike King hack attack jigs. I am just getting into pouring lead and had a few request for a jig like this. If anyone has an idea it is greatly appreciated.

BigHawgBaits, I've been doing this a long time so I'm going to try to help and give you some advice at the same time. The closest mold you can get in a Do-it mold would be the bullet head which isn't what the hack attack jig is, to make that head you have to have a custom mold made from a mold maker and it has to be different enough not to infringe on Strike King which means you'll have to have it designed. Being that you are just getting into this I can assume you don't want to spend $300 to $500 on having a 2 or 3 cavity mold made so this is where my advice is going to come in. If I had guys asking me for the hack attack jig I would direct them to the nearest tackle store, really. Custom baits is about making something different that what you can buy, and even though we can all buy the molds the bait will be different, if I gave 5 people the same molds to make a bait, I will bet a million dollars I'm going to get 5 different baits, and that is what I love about this. Now, every now and again a design comes along that we want to make for ourselves but can't due to trademarks and stuff, in that case we roll with what we can but try to make the best we can using what is available, for a head design like the hack attack it needs to be custom made. Now, that said, there are numerous other heads that work fantastic, so what kind of jigs do you want to make to start off?  If you are going to fish brush then I would suggest the Arky style jig, the Trokar Arky is an awesome powerful jig and there are other hooks that can fit besides the Trokar they are designed for. If you are going to fish grass, then go with the Snootie jig or Bullet jig, these are both great as well, the Snootie makes for an awesome compact jig that comes through grass better than any jig I ever used before. If you are probing deep rock there are numerous football heads to choose from but approach making jigs not by what you want to copy but by what you need. Look to see where the jig will be used the most and go from there, you can ask questions here like you just did and we can help but there are limitations and special heads that are developed by big companies like Strike King usually have protections on them so you or anyone else can't make a copy. Don't let this get in your way, like I said, lot of really good jigs to choose from, let me know what you will be fishing and I'll help you out.

They fish everything from thick hydrilla, brush, and timber. They have always used the hack attack so I was looking for something close that would work in all those areas. I am not looking for an exact match but something close that they would be happy with it.

what makes the hack attack jig so special is the hook .... it is supper heavy and I cant seem to find that hook anywhere
and also its not a regular 60 or 28 degree bend hook its a 2 part hook to me it looks like a 60 degree hook was cut off just past the bend and a supper heavy straight shank hook
both are put in the mold and the head is cast around them to hold the together

if anyone knows were to get those hooks could you let me know

I agree with small jaw. Give your opinion why what you make will suit their needs. If they have to have "that jig or bait"  then some times the honesty of saying... you might should just buy em at the the tackle store will earn you more business than than anything. Have you tries making a clay model and silicon?

The hook on the hack attack jig is made special for SK which means the consumer, us, can't buy it and the head style is something there isn't any match for either. You have to buy some of those jig and make your own 2 piece mold with RTV silicone or have a custom made out of aluminum but that is costly. It sounds to me like you want to do this to start a business, well if that is the motivation I think you should reconsider, the reason is everyone here has a passion for fishing in general and it is strong to the point is spills over and so we make custom tackle and we love doing it. I will help you along all I can but if your motivation is making money, well it will take years to recoup your initial investment as you need to buy hooks, paint, skirt material plus a melting pot and you'll need a lead source, if you are trying to save money, well that isn't going to happen, at least not right away, it will take a few years until you made up the initial investment. I don't want to discourage you but you seem to be set on the hack attack jig and you can't buy anything close and if you could, have you poured before? You need to realize you will be pouring 1 jig at a time, then you get a bunch poured then you have to break or cut the sprues off then file or sand the sprue mark down and paint, there is a lot of time so if you don't mind not getting paid for you time then you will be set. I know I sound negative but your post set off red flags, I have heard the exact same thing from many and I've also saw them sell off molds and melting pots soon after, there is a lot of work and the money, well you need a spin casting machine to really make money because it is based off production and high volume production at that. Custom baits demand a premium as there is better attention to detail on custom baits because of the low volume of production but there is a federal excise tax that is 10%, now add that to your custom premium price and you suddenly see your client or customer list drop as casual angler won't pay the steep price you will need to charge in order just to break even. If you still want a good jig that will work for just about every situation then you are looking at the bullet head, it is and old design that is still around, basically the special heads you see now are just bullet heads made fatter, that is basically what they are.

Lamar thank you for the simple answer I will look into that mold. As for some others thanks for assuming I didn't know how competitive this market is and the challenges it presents but I have been pouring plastics for awhile now and wanted to try something new. Customer service goes a long way so if I tell someone I will look into it I will do what I say if I have to go back and say no such luck so be it but I will ALWAYS research and ask questions for my customers those that don't will lose business.

TRUTH... It is the most versatile Weedless Jig Mold in the Do-It Catalog.

In all seriousness this year my fishing partner and I won 3,000 dollars using the poison tail jig. The main lake we caught them on we fished heavy weeds with that jig for the most part. It has it's own hook and a different head. If your looking to make something different that works then check it out.

Not directed toward you at all Herman but I would be interested in seeing the hook. I was really just looking for something that would fish similar to it.
