Treble Hooks and Variants
« on: 11/24/13 08:57 UTC »
What are Your thoughts on Treble Hooks?  Do You like them?  Are they dangerous?  Any real Pro's and Con's?

What about the different colors?  Do You believe the splash of Red from a Red Treble does anything?  I'm a DieHard fan of Black Nickle on ALL hooks, for Corrosion Resistance and the "subdued" color of Black that's a little less noticeable than other finishes like Tin or Galvanized.

To be honest, all hooks can be dangerous not just trebles.

For the most part I won't swap out trebles for singles on any bait that has trebles from the get-go EXCEPT on some of the trolling lures I use on Lake Superior. And when I change those hooks out I use the black nickel hooks and as a rule make the single a size larger.

The only thing I use a treble hook on is a crank bait. I will trade the front one with a red hook sometimes. When I go to Canada I use only single barbless hooks. I normally target larger pike. I think a single barbless hook penetrates easier and does less damage when removing. A treble hook kills to many fish. When jigging for walleye I use a barbed hook so the minnow stays on.

BKJ - What a question!!!  Here are just a few thoughts:

I use a lot of treble hooks - on Crank Baits, Spoons, stingers for jigs, etc.
People mis-handling fish can be far more dangerous than trebles to the fish.
Pros - the key is to getting a the barb portion of the hook into flesh - trebles give you X 3
Red and Glow hooks definitely have their time and place. Move a Bleeding Bait treble around on a crappie bait and see where the fish end up getting stuck.
I rely on the sharpness of the hook before I consider nickel, tin etc.
I will change out dull "stock" hooks for new sharp hooks - with the exception for crankbaits like Flicker Shads, Salmos, Reef Runners all come with awesome hooks to start - but changing to a heavier or lighter hooks may change the action of cranks and trigger more strikes (and sometimes less)
Take somebody fishing soon!

I like them. When I unbox a new crank, topwater or jerkbait I'll take a pair of wire cutters & bust off the stock hooks & put on some Mustad KVD Elite Trebbles.I also Will use a Treble for a line thru swimbait. As far as color I pretty much stick with black nickle

I have found that on the jigging spoons we use, a sharp treble will hook more fish ( and trash on the bottom ).  It is also more difficult to unhook a treble, as typically there are two and often all three hooks in-bedded.  Rougher on the fish as well.  We always use pliers; usually a bent nose variety.  When we are really on fish while jigging; we keep a box of single hooked spoons in the boat to help with this problem.  White Bass are the specie we have the most problems with.  It seems color can make some difference, depending on light levels and depth.

A good friend of mine once told me:  "treble hooks are good for catching everything but money, women, and fish.  Remember that the next time you're cutting one out of your boat carpet!"

Now you know, and I know, he uses treble hooks as much as anyone else, but every time I get one hung up where it ain't supposed to go, I remember what he said and how it sorta rings true...  At least it lightens my mood while I untangle a treble hook from what ever it happened to latch on to at an inconvenient moment.

sorry to interrupt, please carry on.

Roger on ALL that, Fella's!

I've been using them for most of my life on Spoons, Hardbaits, even some live bait.  Trebles have accounted for many'a ice chest of Specks, Flounder, Reds, and many-many Bass (among others).  Yes, all hooks are dangerous, and most accidents are probably Operator Error, but I've made up my mind to switch.  I use some Owner SSW's in some places but Owner Mosquito Hooks are the Main Flavor, from #4 to 2/0.  Mustad Beak Bait Hooks have a place on a few of my Hardbaits that see Saltwater, 2/0 and 7/0.

The reason I posted this is because I have some Up For Grabs.

2 packs of 25 (1 pack open, maybe 2-3 out) Mustad 35647R (Red) #8
2 packs of 25 (1 pack open, maybe 2-3 out) Mustad 35647R (Red) #6
2 packs of 25 (1 pack open, maybe 2-3 out) Mustad 35647R (Red) #4
1 3"x5" 4-mil Recloseable Poly Bag that's about 2/3rd's-full (kind of packed) of various sizes of Black Nickle Trebles...some are Light Wire, most are Standard Bass/Walleye stuff, some Round Bend, some 2X Heavy, a few are probably Pike/Musky size.

Whoever wants them gets them.  This will all go in a USPS Small Flat Rate so I won't even charge shipping.  I'll pay the $6 to see them go to someone who wants them.

And Yes Sir, Mr. Paul.  Whether a Speck or Flounder or Red, a good one in a Landing Net slinging a Treble or 3 will make a silly mess out of that webbing.  Talk about hurt the fishing time.
