keeping a cookbook
« on: 07/18/13 15:10 UTC »
I guess it is time that I start keeping a cook book, I mainly make baits for my own use but I have had a couple buddies ask for some and they want certain colors that I have made before. I have never kept track of what I have mixed before, so now it is time. Couple questions;
1) how do you keep your cook book? on paper or digital?
2) pictures?
3) do you keep all recipes based on the same amount of starting raw plastic?
4) have you ever had recipes where colored sprue is included?

Thanks

I keep my notes on Evernote... a computer and/or web based "notebook". Just think of it as a 3 ring binder...but electronic. It's easy to add pictures and text, links to websites and copy pics or text from a website. I take a picture of my bait with my phone and then email it to my Evernote account and then make notes on temperature, colors used, etc.

I also keep notes such as furnace filter size, fishing log for the year,  the type of detergent I'm supposed to buy (according to my wife!), frequent flyer numbers, recipes   etc. etc. I call it "brains in my pocket" !

You can access your notebook on your computer, internet or smartphone...or print out the pages you want and store them the old fashioned way!

Plus...it's free!

I just created a word document and saved it. I already have about 80 recipes in it and I print off a paper version to have at the work station for quick reference. I also have a DVD copy that I can add to periodically in case of a fry job on the hard drive.

I use all 4 ounce batching to keep things simple and on an even keel.

Something I do related to the cookbook is to bag a couple of every color I make and number/name the bag according to recipe. I add rcipes to the end of the document and number/name them in that order. I have pegboard in a closet where I hang this color library.  Pictures on the computer can be deceiving....plastic in the hand doesn't play mind games. Something to think about.

I use a 3 by 5 index file, like you use for recipes.

I keep a notebook on my work bench that has all of my recipes which I name and number.  New recipe, new name and new number.  I also have a white poster board that's about 1/8 inch thick.  I stick a push pin in a discarded bait/ sprue, etc and stick it on the poster board with a corresponding recipe number.  The poster board is velcroed to the freezer where I keep all my dead woodchucks.  Works for me.
Until next time.

I overlooked this topic somehow, but for anyone else considering keeping a cookbook...(everyone should). I have started a cook book with 180+ recipies on it with a place to edit those and also add your own with page numbers. I also created an excel based recipe convertor that will scale your recipies and tell you how many drops per oz etc.

You can get the free cookbook at lonestarbaitco.com

I keep a small wire bound pocket note book and a pencil on top of the microwave. I use the KISS method. Most recipes are written for either 4 or 8oz of raw plastic.
