Crows have apparently found favor with Rochester and have been a major problem in the past four years or so during the winter months. The city has hired companies to come in and chase the crows out of town but its more like a relocation within the city. Some of these guys use bottle rockets and lasers to roust the black birds and have asked city residents to shoo them away if they find crows roosting near them. I'm always more than happy to oblige. In our yard, rockets red glare about every three hours during daylight hour. But now with the snow and cold weather heading our way, these birds won't even leave town to look for food and have started in on my feeders. Tat's war and rockets don't fly for that. I currently have nine in the trash can and two on the roof of the house just this morning. Its my own version of sniper games with the pellet rifles. Keeps me sharp for the deer woods too.

I don't know why the city doesn't set up a crow shoot city-wide for a week. The only things that these birds respond to as far as leaving the area is boom or death. I think boom AND death at the same time is needed to drive the point home. I'd be a very willing participant if the city would get their heads out of  their nether regions. The crows are a mess wherever they decide to roost, worse than pigeons. When these dinks show up at the feeders, they don't just eat what's on the ground they tear the feeders apart and have free pickings when the feeders spill it on the snow.

I can't speak for Crows, but I do know that Blackbirds are Fair Tablefare.  It might be an issue that was discussed a little while back about "eating crow", so this is about all I can lend.

I went out and bought a crow decoy and left it lying side wards (dead) by the bird feeders. Crows never came back!

I have a rule that I don't kill anything unless I'm going to eat it (only exception is Moles in the front yard!)...and I just don't want to "eat crow" (literally!).   ;)

I've still got to pluck those off the roof. Maybe Ill tie one by the foot to the feeder they seem to enjoy destroying. And Andy, I don't shoot anything that I'm not going to eat either as long as its a game animal. Crows are a pest. Pests need to be controlled. Rats are a pest and I think people go to extremes sometimes in getting rid of them and those that perish aren't on a menu.

Just going to point out that crows are a federally protected species.  Might want to be careful about what you say on a public board, Tom.

In Louisiana it is OK to shoot crows if they are destroying your crops.  ie..small gardens, pecan trees etc. Or so I was told.
You can take string and criss cross it on the ground and the crows won't go near it. I used fishing line over small veg beds and they left the sprouts alone.

 My town is overrun with squirrels. They'll move into my attic if I don't keep them in check. I send every one of them that I see on my bird feeder to the big nut tree in the sky.
  We have a liberal crow season here in OH, but I don't think many people hunt them anymore. I haven't in years, but I'm ordering a Foxpro predator call this weekend. I'm gonna have a couple crow calls programmed into it. We have tons of them around these days.
 I wish our Canadian goose season was as long as crow season, with bigger bag limits. We have them in nuisance numbers here. They don't even migrate anymore. They're here year round, crapping all over everything, launch ramps, beaches, docks, yards,  basically any unwooded land near water is covered in goose crap. ------Tim.

 Crow numbers are on the rise around here in southern MI. but those dang geese have got to go. X2 on what t-billy said, they poop everywhere and they are not scared of people or dogs, they spend hunting season in parks and on golf courses where its safe. We have a very nice park here with lots of water for fishing and paths for walking and its a mess, you have to throw your shoes away after walking around, they have tried all kinds of things to get rid of them but nothing works.

The best thing to scare honkers off is me with a goose call! That and a 10 gauge loaded with #2's. Crows are a blast to shoot!  And owl decoy and a caller is a gooood time

C-tom if want to get rid of them my town puts out dead ones nailed to boards it take a day or two they seam to go away they are smart bird there get the idea
