3.75 Super Stinger ? for Jason
« on: 09/01/11 09:25 UTC »
I got one of these in my sample pack and it just flat out caught fish, till they tore it to pieces. I Texas rigged it using a split shot about a foot in front of it. That's how I fish most of my baits because I'm fishing rocky streams that are 1 to 4 feet average depth. My question Jason is did you ever consider putting a "hook pocket" similar to what the Wutz-it has in this bait? I didn't miss many strikes with it Texas rigged but just seems like alot of plastic for the hook to slide through to make the hook-up. Maybe it's made more for a jighead ?  Just wonderin'.

Hi Rick,

It was actually designed as a drop shot bait (hook through the nose).  It did really well on Erie for the FLW event recently.

I have received quite a bit of feedback on this bait, being fished ways I had never envisioned.  It would appear it has much broader capabilities than what it was originally designed for (I've also done quite well on it using a jig head with LMB, nothing huge but good numbers).

I will revisit the bait and see what would be involved with making it more conducive to T-Rigging.

Funny how you think you have something figured out, and the fish continue to humble us.  Pretty awesome to learn from something as simple as a fish (simple???).

It's this kind of feedback that lets us know we have something that needs to be further explored.

Thanks Rick,

Jason

 An opinion  ---

A Weedless hook ( wire guard ) especially if it has holding barbs is the way to go if you want separation from the bait to the weight and barb protection.  Eagle Claw #249 comes in a good size for this. Or a Gamakatsu Weedless hook.  Glue the bait to the hook with soft bait glue.
Another option is a small ( 1/32 ) jig head with a larger hook  --  Do-It Round Head Jig Mold 635 Small Weight.  Not as weedless but does pretty well in rocks, makes the bait ride upright, and great hooks abound for this mold.  Must pour it HOT for good heads though.  It is tough trying to get a Texas rig to work on a shad body.
