Hand tying jigs?
« on: 11/21/15 09:37 UTC »
What's the most efficient/effective way to hand tie jigs? I've seen wire, thread, and braid. I usually use the standard rubber skirt bands but was curious about hand tying. Do you tie before adding weed guards or after? Appreciate any tips you have to offer.

I can only speak for hair or feather jigs, and for them I think thread is the only way to go. I like a thread strong enough to hold but not so big that it builds up to fast. If your talking silicone skirt material there are alot of bass guys on here that will know about that too.

Welcome aboard the Do-It forums Jigs.

Its a personal preference thing. Some will swear by wire, some the rubber bands. Others will go with thread. One guy even swears by small zip ties.

Appreciate the welcome.
I've been pouring jigs for 10 years so not a total newbe. A lot of vets from tackleunderground and other forums helped me out back in my infancy and I can tell some of them are on this forum as well. I've been lurking for a while and decided to register to swap info and for the great community of "friends"! I'm always pouring jigs since everything else in my boats is for  "decoration"! Got some pics in the gallery from last nite's batch but for some reason I can't post pics here?

I've used wire, bands, and thread and it depends what I want to accomplish. When it comes to spinnerbaits I'll either wire tie or I use bands, with the bands I can carry a few heads and 2 dozen skirts in a small space but wire tying when space isn't a problem. Jigs are a little different, if I need something quick before a trip I'll use a band but most of the time I use thread or wire. If a jig has a weed guard and I'm tying with thread, then the weed guard goes on after I'm done tying, if I'm wire tying the skirt, well I can do it with the guard in place but it is easier to do so without it. When it comes to hair, fur, and feathers, then it is only thread, Danville 210 denier flat waxed nylon thread to be exact.

Furs and feathers always thread tied - anywhere from UNI 6/0 fly thread to the Danville 210 flat waxed nylon.

I have collars for spinnerbaits and bass jigs, some will use the thread or wire but you have to be careful how hard you pull so you don't cut through it.

I tread tie everything. I just hate messing with the skirt all the time. I have a spindle that I use to tie my baits so it's just as easy to tie them with the weed guards already on them. Then I use clear fingernail polish to sell the deal.

I use thread as well and my favorite is "Big Fly Thread" sold by Barlow's. I use it on all jig materials.
