Pearlex in Powder Paint
« on: 12/08/16 10:03 UTC »
Apdriver came through on my request for some spinnerbaits & hardware and I spent a little time with the spray gun yesterday. Considering that a #4 brown mepps with a red & white blade is one of our most consistent producers of fish, I started thinking about a similar pattern for a spinnerbait. But I don't have brown powder paint. I do have clear and several bronze/gold pearlex colors though. Just like in plastic, a little goes a long way. 1/8 tsp or so in 1 T of clear powder is plenty. This is antique bronze and is a good fit for the color pattern. This is my prototype, so no view of the skirt or blades. :) I'll be doing two more of them, when they're finished up I'll take pics of them.

Very nice, I need to get some pearlex to try some things out that I have in my head. Now, if you have no brown you can make it by blending orange and blue or orange and black or green and red. The one thing with powder paint is it actually doesn't mix together, instead it blends and when it is applied to a hot lure it will melt together giving you the color you want so have some scrap metal you can try it on first and add small amounts of color at a time and write it down so you can duplicate it.

Good tip Smalljaw. And yes, get some pearlex. It's really versatile. I'm enjoying working with powder, lots of options and not that different from working with plastic.

Now get a small soft paint brush Nick and use that powder on plastic, then cover dip it.

A little bit definately goes a long ways - If you can get a good sale at Michaels or Hobby Lobby you can get the PearlEx Kits.  System 1 and 2 packs

And as SmallJaw said Write down what you do to get colors - or you'll never get them again!!

This is a good time of year to find deals from Joann's. They carry pearlex online and you can usually find at least 50% off one item.

No plastic work for awhile here, Tom; still no house. Even powder painting is probably pushing it.
