HELP!! Powder paint baking problem.
« on: 03/07/17 15:20 UTC »
I tried a batch today in a smoke color. When I baked the jig heads they were stuck to my pan! I popped them loose and spots that were stuck the paint is gone. Why are they sticking to the pan??

You have to use a wire rack to hang the hooks on to bake powder heads, or any other for that matter. They'll stick like glue if you just spread them out in a pan.

I use the jig clamps from http://www.tjstackle.com. I use to hang them on a wire that I made but if you got just a little to much paint on them you ended up with a cone head. Like everything else it's a learning curve. Also TJ's has some great videos you should watch on how to powder paint.

Thanks guys, that makes sense. I'm thinking about trying to just paint over the smoke color with black so I don't lose the heads I just done or otherwise I've lost 20 heads. Also how long should they hang to dry before baking?

Zero times. I powder paint then I take the jig over the heat gun till it turns glossy and then dip it in water. Then I put it in the jig clamp and bake at 450 degrees for 30 minutes. Watch the videos on TJ's. It's well worth it.

You said you might "paint over the smoke". You are using powder paint? Just heat the jigs for a couple of seconds, dip in the powder paint, pull out and heat over the heat gun till they start to turn glossly. Hang them up and they're ready to go in the over for about 20 minutes at 350 degrees.

Yea I realized that would work after I posted that.

When I use the TJ clamps I set them on a cookies sheett in my oven  with the jig head pointing up.  No pointy heads!

I also recommend their fluid beds. They coat the hot jigs with a nice light (and even) coat of paint.

Also, watch their video on "tapping" on a top color. It takes a little practice but once you get good at it you can make some great multi color baits.

Warning: The more time you put into a fancy jig and multi color plastic trailer...a tree or Northern Pike will find it irresistible!

I made myself a fluid bed, it worked pretty good. I didn't have a problem with painting, they looked great! Just made a mistake on baking but I learned from that. I'm trying to get pretty good at it cause I'm going to start a small business doing it and injecting plactics.

You don't let them dry before baking. You need to hang them on a rack to bake them. If you just lay them on a sheet they will stick no matter how long you let them sit before baking. The idea is that you use a rack of some kind so the jig head hang by themselves without touching anything because when you bake them to cure you are making the paint soft and then it will harden as is it cools and you have a cured jig. So if the heads are touching anything when they cure they will either stick or if they don't stick you'll have a flat spot so hang the jigs on a rack so they aren't touching anything to bake.
