Spline/Insert question
« on: 06/30/17 23:19 UTC »
I am thinking of getting the 4 inch skirted chub grub and one of the gorilla tubes.  Do you need the "blank" insert for the chub grub?  No insert at all?  If not then what is the blank insert for?
If ill be fishing the gorilla tube Texas rigged I see there's a t-rig insert that makes the bait capable of being Texas rigged...if I just want a solid bait and no tube can I go without an insert or would I use the blank insert?  I see the insert screws into the spline...does the blank insert just fill that gap?
Thanks!!
Also...to hijack my own questions....regular spline or the spiked spline opinions?  I'm leaning spiked for my first crack at this.

Jkwbwca-

I'm not completely sure what you are asking about with your reference to the "blank" but I think you're asking about the skirt section (ask again if this is not the case).

So, (as you seem to know) there is a spline insert to create the skirt, and for a tube there is a pin (of varying sizes) that threads in to the spline insert; a full pin creates a full tube for inserting a jig head, but a shortened pin can fill the nose (or more) for texas-rigging, and pin sizes go all the way down to an allen screw (to protect the threads) which is basically a blank for the spline insert.  With my Flippin' Gorilla, I also have a 3/4" pin which allows me to create a mostly solid body to thread directly on the Arky-style jig for pitching.

As far as skirt insert options, that's preference... but I will say that the squiggle skirt impressed me so much at the get together that it instantly became a "must have".

Thanks efishnc!!
Yes...what was a little confusing was the blank insert pin.  Although the inserts aren't expensive I was still wanting to order just what I needed.
I've got an order of 5 sample baits included the gorilla tubes and chub grub coming so I'm excited about that.  I anticipate them being great baits from reviews and a couple videos so I'm sure ill be ordering them.
Thanks for your help!
