Need advice on spinner bait hardware
« on: 11/04/19 02:25 UTC »
I recently purchased the Ultra Spinner Jig mold in the 1/4”, 3/8 and 1/2 oz. I ordered the wire forms that are called for which are .035 and .040 diameter. Through my searches across the internet I learned a great deal about how blade size and shape effect the baits retrieval. I just can’t seem to find a definitive rule of thumb (if such a thing) of what size of anything I’m suppose to use as hardware such as beads, swivels, clevises and blades. By using the Do-It catalogue as a visual reference I’m guessing a 5/32-3/16 beads; a #3-#4 clevises; and #3-#4 blade for the smaller cavity up to a #4-#5 for the larger cavity.

So, if you guys were putting a single blade general purpose spinner bait together using the above mentioned sizes with hammered Colorado and willow leaf blades for each what size beads, clevises, swivel and blade would use?

What size blades would you choose if you were going to do a general purpose tandem of each?

If you are using a ball bearing swivel you use a #2 and that works with 1/4oz up to 1oz. Clevis you use a #3, and for beads a 1/8" and 5/32" will both work. So a single spin 1/4oz bait I'd use either a #3.5 or #4 willow or a #3 or #3.5 Colorado. A 3/8oz single spin willow will be a #4 or #4.5 and a Colorado will be a #4 Colorado. The 1/2oz bait would be a #5 or #6 willow or the #5 Colorado. Those are single spin models, you don't need a clevis with a single spin. Tandem baits you'll need a #3 clevis for .035" and .040" diameter wire. The blade sizes are a little different, for 1/4oz baits I like a #3.5 willow and a #2 Colorado, for a 3/8oz bait I use a #4.5 willow and a #3 Colorado and the 1/2oz is a #5 willow and a #3 or a #3.5 Colorado. There is no industry standard or rule of thumb, there are charts but even those will have different recommendations for different sizes.

Thank you, I appreciate the guidance. Btw, I found an old post you made back in 2013 if I remember correctly concerning blade spacing very helpful. Got that one saved for reference too.
