minnows/gulp
« on: 04/02/20 10:42 UTC »
Here are some minnow baits I make up just, and only, for being put in a jar of Gulp juice. These are done in my favorite Gulp 1" minnow colors but are 1.5" in length. I've never made any other color to do this with the minnows, but I do have Do-Its 1.5" Thump-It done purple/chartreuse tail sitting in another jar of Gulp juice.

There's some violet hi lite in the smoke color and it can be seen trying to sneak out in the picture. Do-Its twin injector sure does a dandy job as seen
here. Everything here is Do-It except the minnow shape.

While I think that the plastics we make don't really allow for deep scent penetration I do feel the Gulp stays with baits that have been immersed in it, I do feel that the scent gets into the "skin" of the baits and will offer some scent for a while. My practice is to use a scented bait for about 1/2 hour then take it off the jig carefully and slip it back in the jar. This seems to work pretty good given that the Gulp doesn't seem to be a petroleum product. I do know one thing....the fish sure enjoy a bait that's gotten the dunk treatment.

I've always heard that Gulp would make regular plastic baits hard and brittle. So you should only soak what your going to use in a day's fishing?

Fallacy Gary. I have Essential baits soaking in Gulp juice that have been there for three years now and are as supple as ever. Can't speak of other plastics but Do-It has it done right for this little trick.

The gulp, as I remember, has an orangish tint to it. Any bait discoloration over time? Sounds like you have an excellent Petri dish.

The Gulp does have some color to it but it doesn't affect the plastic's colors at all even after three years in the stuff, including two winters in an unheated garage.

I did up a mess of the Wax Wigglers a couple year back, lots of different fluorescent colors, and packed them in a jar of gulp juice and used them last fall on the docks and they were just as clear and nice as when they hit the jar. And they smoked sunfish on a couple of those cold fall mornings.

I've toyed with other scents without much luck, but I have seen some positive things come from storing plastics in Power Bait packages of like colors for a couple months or more. I tried doing this with some of Mr. Twisters Exude panfish baits but to no avail that I could see. Beats me, but Berkley seems to have the scent world with a fence around it when it comes to adding some scent to home-brewed plastics. I haven't tried this with the Crystal Clear plastic but plan to as I think the formulations are close. More later on with this project.

I’ve used gulp juice also but really have had a lot of luck with

Combo craw/shad. The walleyes by me love it. Bang leaves a oil slick on the water but it works.

I make these and bag them with gulp juice for when we go to Canada. There's one lake where we have three portages before we get into there and a bag of these rolled up in a pocket is way easier then a minnow bucket full of water. I don't know if it's just in my head but I do feel the gulp juice helps.

Nice baits Lamar. I make a similar color in that 2 3/4" Fat Fork and pack them into some smoke colored Power Baits and let them bask in the scent that comes in the bag. I'm convinced that in either product's presence the baits we make will take on enough of the scent to make a difference. I know on crappies I can fish identical baits one of which got the soak and that one will out perform the untreated one five to one on some days. I don't see this as a bad thing for walleyes either.

Wonder how a vacume packer with a glass jar and suck the air out and the pores of the plastic should suck the gulp right in.

I'm sure there are all sorts of things a person could do to try and get the juice into the plastic deeper but this low impact method works for me so I'll leave it at that.

I'm with you with at least walleye. They grab on that and will not let go. With no sent they seem to just peck at it. Then it's a hit or miss.

Personally I think a lot of people are missing the boat by not doing this especially on panfish/crappies and most likely walleyes as well.

These are some great ideas, and some great looking baits!

I don't pour any plastics, only do lead, but I do like the Gulp baits. I don't feel that for a "action" type bait, they're any better than regular plastics. I've tried the various minnow baits they have and paddle tail or curl tail plastics produced as well and often better. That's been for bass, Stripers, or some of the inshore saltwater species. There's no walleye in my area.

I like the Gulp better where I use them as a substitute for live bait, like a shrimp, or a piece of blood worm in saltwater and primarily on a jig head.

I use the Zoom Tiny Flukes a good bit, and had not thought of soaking them in Gulp liquid.

Thanks for this post!
