I like to fish for bluegills and crappie with a 1" Sweedish Pimple with just a single hook off the back and a very small plastic bait threaded onto the hook or tipped on the end (for example about 1/2 the tail from a 1.75" Small Fry or the entire small fry, or a piece of the Trout Worm really works well). I catch a lot of big bluegills and crappies on this method.

Is there a name for this method... Fishing a small spoon lure with a soft plastic "tipper"??

I've been bugging Jason (like he has nothing else to do!) for a 3/4" Beetle bug to thread on the single hook off the back ...and for ice fishing.  The ultra tiny "ice fishing" baits are also excellent for warm water drop shot and micro jig fishing for bluegills and crappie.

By the way...not just little fish eat micro baits...Last fall I landed a 38" Northern Pike on the 1.75" Small Fry on a small jig while crappie fishing. I don't know how she didn't "bite me off".... I think the old girl didn't have any teeth left!

Vertical Jigging.  Works on everything from 12 oz. bream to 500 lb. Bluefin tuna.
Technique is the same; just change the spoon design & weight,  and rod, reel and line weights.  I vertical jig a large percentage of the time.

I've been vertical jigging (about 25%) and casting them out and getting the hits on the fall. Is this similar to "dock skipping" ? Casting it to a target and getting the hit on the fall?

I do the same thing with small jigs...but this method using the small spoons seems to really bring out the bigger fish.

The Swedish Pimples and the smallest Kastmasters are all I use thru the winter, if I hit the ice. If the crappies are really cracking the bait I generally tie on a conventional 1/32 head and a standard sized open water plastic. I know Andy has fished the "nuggies" before and they were always a hot topic amongst Minnesota ice anglers, but the stuff being made here on the is site makes those baits look like bowling balls. This winter will have some interesting new presentations to try....if we cool down enough to make ice.

Andy.....I'll use the Pimples and Kmasters thru the warm months if I am snuggling up to sunken brush or pilings and want to fish a little faster than a jig allows. There are times when using them as you suggest, cast/retrieve after sinking works great on suspended fish.

What pound test line are you gouys using? I know you go light in the winter, but if there's brush around; how light?

Yes...and I saw a piece on it on an InFisherman show this winter....and thought I needed to try it...and it works! Really well!

I just don't know what to call it when I describe it to others!
