Just Different Thoughts/Ideas
« on: 12/01/12 04:08 UTC »
I'm always thinking...deliberate thinking.  I go through at least 1 5-subject notebook a year, writing this 'n that.

I very much look forward to the day I can pour a 1/8 oz. CCM Jighead with 3/0 and 4/0 hooks, watching the 4" Skinny slap the face of a Speckled Trout as it shakes it's head.

I've been doing some thinking on how to apply a CCM bait offshore, and I have an answer...7" Regular Carrot.  The only bump I hit is that it takes all of a 4 oz. Injector then needs to be topped-off.  Jason, what about a 3 cav. in that bait, so it can be shot with a Medium Injector?  The 7" Regular has to be a big bait, what's the diameter?  I can see that bait on a 4 oz. or 6 oz. jighead...it would sink fast since it's straight-tailed (that's a plus in 150' to 400' of water), and the classic Carrot Profile would surely result in an all-out test of Your gear...and Your arms...and Your back.  I also think that looking at the "nature" of offshore fishing, a 3 cav. 7" Regular would be perfect for using up old or yellowed plastic, not to mention intended colors.

I don't think it'd really imitate an Eel, more-so since it's a Regular, not a Skinny.  I think the 7" Regular would be an awesome Baitfish imitation...compare the pics of the Regular7 and Skinny7.  And a 6 oz. jighead is used quite widely, I personally used to use them on 8" Curltails.  With that Regular7 on one, Offshore Species wouldn't be able to staple their mouth shut to keep from eating it.  I'd use a 4 oz. jighead in upto maybe 200' if there was no current and I was fishin' deep, but go to the 6 oz., otherwise.  Casting that bait would be a different story...a 2 oz. or 3 oz. would be plenty-plenty.

Same here.  I'd go as much as an 8 oz. if it was needed.  That Regular7 would be deadly.  I'd get one if I could get a 3 cav....

I shoot the 7" Carrot with a medium injector. I just draw it around 1/3 full, shoot that into the mold then, draw it completely full and finish injecting. It works fine for me. I hold pressure on the injector for a 15 count on the second shot to give the air a chance to work itself out and, top off as it draws down. It does leave a fine squiggly seam where the two shots join but I'm sure the fish won't care. If you want to make laminates, you can hand pour one side then close the mold and shoot the rest. The medium injector has plenty of capacity to do that in one shot. The 7" is 1/2 in diameter. It's a meaty bait with lots of wiggle. I'm looking forward to fishing a floating 7" on a shakeyhead when the big girls start moving shallow in the spring. It'll also see action Texas and Carolina rigged, wackyrigged, as a jerkbait and as a topwater. The Carrot series has to be the most versatile bait out there.

The other option is to fill the spru from your cup, then inject it.  I know 4 cavities is a bit much, but I hate wasting space.  You could also just leave one bait in there all the time....

Awesome T-Billy, thank You Sir.  I'm definitely pondering that beast.  I think there's a few bucks to be made with the Regular7 as an offshore bait.  The Regular7 as a Baitfish, and a Skinny7 as an Eel.  The Bullet or Spire Head with a Barb Collar would be good, but I'd prefer a Spearhead if I could get one in 2-3-4-6 oz., and a Barb Collar.  Hmmm...  A Do-It Spearhead mold with the Ball Collar can be modified to pour a Barb Collar.
