HDA Question
« on: 02/22/13 19:54 UTC »
Alright so it might end up being two questions. I added 2 teaspoons to 1/4 cup of uncooked plastic, then heated it up to temperature and the entire quarter cup looked like I added white colorant to it. Is this normal? How should I be adding colorant to get it to a "regular" color such as green pumpkin? Is it possible to add this to clearer baits? It ended up being 3 questions but oh well I figured you guys are for sure going to be able to answer these questions.

Thanks
Josh

Ok here's my opinion. I've played around with the HD. Take a five gallon bucket of water and make your plastic and put the hook you will use in it and see how fast it sinks. Keep in mine your line may make it sink faster. From what you say you are mixing it by it should sink like a rock. Is that what your looking for ? HD does cloud your bait some but it will more if your using as much as you are. Maybe you could use less and get more the color your looking for.

I normally add 2 TABLEspoons per 4 oz...and it turns out grey, so you have to add about 2x's (or more) of your normal amount of colorant.

So far...I have only been using  HD in dark colors..like green pumpkin brown, black, dark browns etc.

I have not able to add it to clear baits...and get clear baits...but it makes some pretty nice "minnow grey" ones! (add some pearl powder)

tablespoons are random. weigh your sinking additives on a scale when you add them. yes it clouds the bait, salt does too.

I agree. I use two tablespoons per 4 oz. The HDA is pretty thick and hard to measure precisely that way. I dont scrape the tablespoon clean so it might be more like 1.75 tablespoons total. I dont have a scale

Okay, Thanks for your answers, I'll try it again today but weigh it first.

I tried it again and used less this time. It worked great! Also I tried your minnow grey recipe. I really like that color. Thanks

scales are cheap, look for mini digital scales on ebay. i got a 0.01g / 2000g scale for something like 7$ with free shipping

How do you weigh it? Do you just put the whole cup of plastic on the scale?

i put my pyrex cup on the scale (record the weight of it for future equations) then hit tare (zero it out) then pour your plastic in to desired amount. take that # and figure out your weight additive formula (somewhere around 1/2 of the weight of the plastic) then tare it again then add your additive to desired amount.

example: pour in 4oz of plastic (somewhere around 124 grams) so if your weight formula is 0.5 times your plastic, you'd take 124 grams * 0.5 = 62 grams.

reasons to record weight of pyrex cup is if your cup is full before you forget to tare the scale, you can simple subtract the pyrex cup weight from your total to see how much plastic you have
