Do any of the Laminate Plates do double duty?
« on: 02/17/13 21:30 UTC »
I know that they are designed for specific molds, but I was wondering if any of them fit more than one mold.

thats a tough one, im sure they could do it if it was planned in advance. but the molds would essentially have to be the same size, and have the same sprue / cavity / alignment layout.

doubt anyone is doing standardized ones.

If your just makin a small number of baits you can use a piece of tinfoil sandwiched between the mold plates to get the same result as a laminate plate. But it all depends on how the cavities are orientated wether you'll get a top bottom lamintae.

This stuff works perfect!

http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/36-gauge-aluminum-roll-864678/

Thin enough to cut with good scissors...but thick enough to last a long time and be flat in the mold.

I cut a sheet a little bigger than the mold. Clamp the mold down on it. Trim the edges with an exact o knife (I leave a small tab at the "open" end to write what mold it belongs to)

Andy's 36 gauge aluminum works well and it serves as a "quick fix" when you're looking for that lami plate you never bought.
Until next time.

I use a pop can that I cut both ends off of and split it up the side, then just punch a hole or two for alignment pins and trim it to fit the mold. So far that has been what I've used. Eventually I'll get lami plates for my molds.

tin foil seems like a good idea, how does the tin foil meet up with the sprue to fit the injector? pictures would be awesome!

Ohhh...forgot one step. After you clamp the mold onto the aluminum sheet you need to cut the sprue out....but remember that you want it only as deep as the bottom of the sprue.

What you actually get is both sides of the bait....with the aluminum sheet dividing them in two. Depending on what bait you are making you either remelt the unneeded side ...or in the case of a carrot...you make a whole bunch of halves ...which you reinsert and shoot the 2nd color. You can make a BUNCH of two color laminate carrots in a real hurry using this method!

Laminate plates work a lot better for baits that have a top and a bottom, but for carrots, worms, CC Gliders etc....it works great.

What would be a good is if ccm could incorprate a laminate plate onto the back of their molds, it would mean moving away from hinged molds but would be a great option if you could get a plate built into the reverse side of the mold . I have a few molds from another company where they have done this and it works well.

When You use the foils between the mold halves, don't cover the ends of the cavity-vents.  Have the edge/end of the foil stop just before it gets to the end of the vents.

I made some sturdy lam plates using some "punch metal" , tin is what I have, found at Hobby Lobby in the same location as Andrew's foil. I cuts nice with a scissors and is heavier than the foil, but still quite thin. The giude pin holes need to be markd and drilled and the holes and edges should get a light filing to removes any burrs but every step is simple and makes for a nice plate. With just a little elbow grease. My metal was about 6"X8" and cost a whopping 2.49. Enough for two molds of small fry size.

I'll bring this back up. I was looking at some things today in the closet and had the Thumper Fry mold in one hand and the lamination plate I made for the 1.75" small fry in the other. Just took a sec to open the mold and check and sure enought, the plate fits this mold as well. I'm assuming that Jason cuts all the molds consistently from the same stock so one plate should work in the other mold between these two anyway.

The 4" Regular Carrot and 4" Skinny Carrot (4" Finesse Worm) may be laid-out the same, as well.  Possibly the same thing with the 5" and 6" Regular and Skinnies.  Other than those, one may find others with enough inspection.
