Clear Dipping Swim Toads
« on: 03/20/13 09:27 UTC »
Hey all!  Wanted to ask a question to those that clear dip their swim toads.  What is your process?  I want to make sure I am doing what everyone else does and not making extra work for myself.  I clear dip the whole body of the swim toad into the plastic.  I let the plastic drip off for a bit and then I dip the swim toad in cold water to cure it.  I then lay the toad down with the bottom side facing up.  I go through and do all of my toads this way.  Later, usually the next day, I bring them in the house.  If necessary, I trim the cured dripped plastic off the nose.  I then stick the nose in the flame of my stove burner to “smooth” it out.  Is this basically the process everyone does?  When I clear dip smaller lures, I am able to tip the lure up and round off the drip before it cures, so I don’t have to do the last step that I do with the toads.  Any feedback is appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

Chuck

Dipping in 350 degree plastic; burning them; and then freezing them.
I am calling the ASPCA on you two.  I am not a big fan of toads; but torture is uncalled for   :'(.

Anything I do the cover dip on I just tap the end of the bait on the rim of the bowl of plastic a couple times to get the big runs off and then drop it in the water.

I don't do anything the size of toads or frogs but on longer baits I only cover dip to slightly past the eyes.

Crabby, my process is pretty much the same.  Only difference is I usually don't have to trim the drip.  Year or two back,I saw Franks video on dipping swimbaits and how he swirls them right above the hot plastic after dipping them.  Works good for me, swirl to pull the excess off, then after the last drip I drop them into water.  Usually bout ninety nine percent turn out smooth with no need to trim.  Don't know if I described the process very well, hope you can understand it.  Joey

Shhhh pjmcla!  What happens on the forum stays in the forum.  LOL!

Thanks guys!  I will try both touching the flat surface and also swirling.  I watched Frank’s video a while ago, but didn’t realize why he was swirling the swimbait above the plastic.  It sounds easy enough.  Thanks again guys!

A fast dip and swirling, my approach as well.
Water just in arms reach; away from the plastic.  Seems like if there is just one little bubble; it is going to be right in the middle of an eye.
