Some luck today
« on: 08/27/13 13:52 UTC »
In spite of the pressure cooker type of heat we have here today I met up with a friend and we hit the big river for about 6 hours of fun.

Smallies, sunfish and crappies all decided that the purple with a chartreuse tailed 1.75" small fry was the meal of the day. Fished on 1/32 D0-It collarless ballheads was the ticket until the sun got up on the water. Then the fish sank into the depths and we saddled up the small frys in a 1/16 collarless Di-It head and went diving. The sunfish and bass didn't go deep but they did quit hitting along about 10. We had been finding both fairly easy on the tops of wing dams. The wingies just didn't have a thing on them after 10 and we stopped at a deep hole with some sunken wood and a little more current. I saw some marks on the locator right near the bottom that didn't look attached to the wood in any fashion so we dropped a pair of lines down and just did the non-aggressive lift/drop on a tight line thing and bang. Crappies... and they were all over the bait.

We bagged enough up for my buddy to have a meal and at high noon we high tailed it.....just as the idiots with tubes, skis and the jet-heads began to descend on the quietude we'd been enjoying.

Saw mess of sandhill cranes, a few deer and plenty of bald eagles. Throw in the fish for dinner and I call it a successful morning. Now....its nap time, not Miller time.
