Just Do-it
« on: 11/02/13 14:12 UTC »
I just finished doing some walleye/smallmouth jigs for a trip on the river next week and I decided to put the logo from Do-it on there. 3/32oz with size #1 black nickel sickle hooks, these should work by themselves, with a soft plastic tail or even a live or preserved minnow, something a little different for you to look at.

All kidding aside, Dan, it is a real treat to see your (and Fatman's) jigs every time they appear on these pages.  The proportions are always point on, the colors work, and you can tell that jig isn't going to come apart after a fish or two.  Kudos to you, again.
Until next time.

I have that mold and like it a lot. I also use the sickle hook. Normally just power coat the heads and fish it with a minnow for walleyes up north. I like your buck tail idea. What type of fur do you use for that ? Back in the day my dad use to make his with bear hair. He always told me the walleye had a harder time spitting it as it would hang up in their teeth. Also going to try that wiggle eye that I saw on another post. Lots of good ideas on here.

Thanks guys, I know I likie seeing what kind of stuff everyone here comes up with, I'm still thinking of doing soft plastics at some point but even though I'm not doing it...Yet, I still look at what is created, I get a lot of color combination ideas from the plastics guys. Mo Quack, I appreciate the offer and I will match it, if you'd like a few jigs to try just let me know where to send them and what kind you want. It is funny because I do use a 2.5" trout worm on the back of these, a friend of mine makes them, he thinks it is funny that I catch smallmouth and walleye on the trout worms but as a trailer on these jigs they work awesome!!! Lamar, nothing special, these are just a Do-it walleye head jig tied with buck tail hair and a little Krystal flash, I use 210 denier thread, a little heavy but I can really cinch it down in the beginning and as Denny has noticed, you aren't going to pull the hair out let alone have it fall out. I got this mold to make hair jigs with which is why I didn't get the the eye socket one as it has a longer collar with a ring and barb, I wanted the ball collar to flair buck tail and craft fur but I knew the barb would possibly give me problems with the trout worms I planned on using and I thought it was funny that it was a walleye mold as I was using it for river smallies and the very first fish I caught on it was a walleye, how cool is that!? I remember telling me buddy, "It really is a walleye jig", but anyway, thanks for the kind words, I love this hobby!!!

I fish at lot of the dams on the Mississippi River. Right about now the water temps are dictating a blade and hair bite. Plastic will reign supreme in a couple more weeks but hair will get fish and lots of them right now. We see huge shoals of 3"to 5" shad mass up ahead of the rollers and they get washed thru and are pretty beat p by the time they get to the edge of the plunge pool where I like to hold the boat on current seams and jig. Lots of current there so I drop some big bombs down to them.

This is Do-It's Flathead mold shot at 3/4 ounce with 4/0 sickle hooks and a 58 pound test stainless steel stinger wire. I crimp on a #4 short shank Mustad as a stinger. Overall length of these is just over 4". Ironically these are fished in almost a "do nothing" style with little more than a 6" to 8" lift drop on a tight line. The walleye and sauger will stack up with their noses right on the current seam where little current is actually found and when one of these comes along on the short lift they absolutely hammer them. I suspect that the huge numbers of fish lying in wait on the shad that get run thru the mill makes for some serious competition for food and the profile of this bait is exactly what those big fish are dining on size-wise.

I make some basic 1/8 and 1/4 ounce jigs like smalljaw shows for casting to shallow sand if we happen to move away from the dam area. Occasionally we will fish a long stretch of deep water when the current flow is down and a light jig can stay vertical by drifting or slipping the current using the trolling motor. Staying vertical in this presentation is essential. If we move too fast thru this deep channel we'll re-tie with the big guns shown here and do very well.

Smalljaw's jigs would be a primo offering when dragging shallow sand flats in the late fall and again in the early spring.

I did a quick check of the water temps in pools four and five on the Mississippi where I fish most on the big river and they come in anywhere from 42 to 46 degrees. At 40 degrees we can expect the hair and blade bits to begin dwindling and the plastic to launch in hysteria for the rest of the winter and well into next spring. Smalljaw's colors would be huge dragging at this time of year while smallies are up there with the waldos.
