I use braid on the reel for castability, sensitivity, lowest spool memory.  Fluorocarbon leaders for lowered visibility mostly, and a sacrificial piece that leaves more line on the reel, longer, because I'm not cutting/retying on line that's on the reel.  It's a bangin' combo.

Something else that will make a big difference as to whether a leader is needed is whether the fish are reaction hitting or studying the bait . Fish hitting smashing a bait probably won't need the leader. If the fish are watching the bait before hitting a leader would most likely do well.

Lamar's comment on using one or the other totally has some credence too. For fishing Lake Superior I run straight fluorocarbon. I've done the different braids using fluoro leaders and my catch rate took a dive....course this is salmon and gin clear water. In that water a salmon can see a speck of dust a half mile away.

i use braid 95% of the time.. with fluoro leader tied the crazy alberto knot..  i have tried powerpro,, power pro slick 8 (its better imo)  and now i use suffix performance braid. can find great deals on ebay. never had the crazy alberto knot fail me.. got more than 3 buddies of mine doing the same thing now. braid is expensive but i had the same braid on some of my rods for 3 years.
I still m looking for the best fluoro. I have tried many.. some one suggested the vicious tournemant line. I fish alot of stained water so maybe i dont need the leader? I just put 1 on cause it has been working for me

Kevin, Seaguar AbrazX is (IMO) the very best for leaders, but can be a little stiff on the reel.  On my reels with fluoro, I strictly use Seaguar Red Label, 12 lb., 15 lb., and 20 lb....Red Label is good all-around line, not extreme in any aspect, good price.  My main Bass rod has the 15 on the reel...I have hit some heavy fish very hard and the 15 delivered the BoLo like a champ.

My #1 suggestion for leaders...AbrazX...hands down.

I use a braid fluro combo on my spinning rod mainly. i only use it to fish smaller japanese baits, shakey heads & drop shots. I like it alot ive fished it for years shallow & deep. the fluro i started using for my leader was seguar invizx but then i got some seguar tatsu & havent looked back. you gotta do what you like & what works for you when its all said and done. as long as your comfortable with how you set it up thats all that matters everyone fishes different
