Baits "dulling" out
« on: 11/25/14 20:34 UTC »
My baits that I pour from scratch seem to lose their sheen after a cpl days.  Has anyone else had this problem and if so how do you go about solving this.

I think I know what you're talking about as some of my baits have done the same thing. If what I'm thinking is correct, you're talking about how a semi clear color, say watermelon, will go from a nice shiny color to more milky green looking?

This has happened to me when the baits have been left somewhere with a lot of moisture or water

Did you get your plastic to 350 on the first heat?

If not, it did not fully change state...which can result in milky and/or sticky baits.

If they are getting cloudy due to water...try putting them in a sunny location and see if that helps.

I'll offer a welcome and a sorry that your first post is about a problem.

I'll also second the two causes mentioned: not cooked to 350 on initial cooking is where I suggest looking first, then the humidity thing. I ran across this one time using a non-Do-It plastic and let the baits sit for a couple days in a room with a de-humidifier running all the time and they cleared up. If you have access to such a room I'd give it a try. If that doesn't work, add a small amount of raw plastic to a cup and re-melt them and re-inject them making certain you get the cook to 350 and that the cup gets stirred real well.

Again.....welcome to the Do-It forums. Helping fix things is what we do.

Its probably not getting the plastic (all of it) to 350.  I dont think it would be moisture because all of my repours seem to be fine.

Thanks for the info guys.  Do you try to get the plastic to say 360 just to make sure all plastic should be 350? I am usimg a IR thermometer and vigorously stir after every heating interval.  Im thinking that an extended stirring at 350 and another 15-20 second heating would get it right.

I have found that my molds pour great at 300-325. Is that somewhat normal? Im not experiencing any kind if malformed baits or dimples ext.

IR thermometers are  not good for measuring temperatures of liquids. Buy the digital probe thermometer that Do-it sells or check out the one I mentioned in a post earlier this week. Lots of posts on thermometers!

If the bait degrades when dipped in acetone. It didnt get hot enough. If it doesnt then there is other problems. Before i remelted i would check. :) Do- it dip is a good way to check..

Edited just for Jerry... :)

Do-It Worm Dips are acetone based as well.  :)

Just wanted to thank you guys for the input.  Haven't had any issues lately, lots more stirring and temperature monitoring was the ticket! Thanks again fellas!
