Being a northern boy....
« on: 11/30/11 10:47 UTC »
.....I tend to be attracted to things that can be used during the winter. One such attraction just happened my way the other day. I want to make it perfectly clear that I think the world of the molds that I have gotten from Jason, but this new one from Jacobs has me shaking. Its an Ice Stinger, 20 unit mold. This thing is going to put some ice anglers on their ears really soon. I was standing in the kitchen mixing plastic when the mail came and this was in the box. Now I am going to have to extend what I planned to do today to include a few shots in this mold.

Move over Nuggies, there is a new guy in town!

If you get a chance can you post a review of it vs, the Ice Pic.  I am always looking for ways to improve.

Thanks,

Jason

Being a "sick and twisted" ice fisherman (living less than 45 miles from Ctom...) I too am always on the look out for new plastic ice fishing baits.

I considered both the Ice Pick and the Ice Stinger....and I went with the 1.75" Small Fry instead...because I can always cut off the tail of the Small Fry and get an Ice Pick!

The difference I see (as a ice fisherman) is  that if I am using the bait on a micro jig...I might want a tiny bit of body to cover the shank like on the Ice Stinger...if I'm tipping a "Gill Pill" (my favorite jig)...then the Ice Pick/Small Fry Tail is the choice. I really like the flat surface of the Ice Pick both for hooking and I think it will move better in the water. However...you can't really thread an Ice Pick onto the shank of a micro jig (I tried!!!).

I have already made up some modified Small fry's where I cut off the front of the bait so that the body covers a micro jig (approx. .25") and then dipped them in clear for appearance reasons. I also dipped some in a different color for a two color bait. This gave me (almost) the ball appearance of the Ice Pick.

By the way....I've also plucked the strands off of some of my CCM Skirts I molded to use as a tipper...and pulled the legs off of some Grub Bugs!!!!

Jason: Remember it can be a long, cold winter up here in Minnesota...so obsessing on the minutia of ice fishing tactics is long cherished! I think you need to come up to Minnesota...in January....and do some market research! I would love to drive you out on the ice in my truck...when it's -20....and do some ice fishing! If it get's really cold...I might even fire up the heater in the tent for you! :P

Where are the jig heads from??? Very nice! I can't seem to get them to thread that well on my hooks...but that may be a result of my age, eyesight etc!!!!

Thanks Dave.

I wasn't looking for the specs (length, etc.).  I wanted to know how it fished.  Maybe you can take my spot with Andy in the tent and if you guys have a chance give me some feedback.

I am curious how the triangle shape vs. the round traditional shape compares on the water.

I'm in on making a trip, but not in January.  I'll be the first to admit I'm soft when it comes to those temps.  How about May or June  ;D

I'll save some space here in January for you guys.

Thanks again.

I shot a few colors today in this new mold and I guess I couldn't be happier with the product outcome. Of course when I want to show them off I have camera issues, but hope to have something to show here yet today.

Without pics I'll give you some thoughts. Anytime an angle or two or three o r four, whatever, gets configured into a length, you create an inherant stiffness. Look at angle iron vs the same length of re-bar the same thickness. You bend the re-bar long before the angle iron bends. Plastics are the same way, only up here this stuff gets compounded by the cold...air and water. Over the last twenty years or so I have been tied pretty close to the ice fishing industry and tackle makers and the one area regarding winter tackle that breaks a lot of these outfits, especially in the area of plastic, is having a product that doesn't respond to the slightest twitch the angler gives it. Keep in mind too that often we are talking 30, 40, or more feet straight down from the rod tip. Its been my experience thru all of this that those makers who market plastics with angles aren't around for mor than a year or two.

In the pic I'll get up late I have a Micro Nuggie and a dime together with the plastics I made so a good comparison can be realized. The Micro Nuggie in the pic has a roundish tail like the ice stinger. That Nuggie has been a standard for maybe five years now. BUT...its the ball at the hook end that many don't care for. These new stingers are basically the same length as the nuggie, have the same tail configuration and action. From the standpoint of marketing these stingers, they will do very well up here smply because they do not have the bulk at the hook like the nuggie but have as much if not more tail action I don't see how its possible to get the tail action in a tail that has any angles involved.

I picked up a pile of 60 of these stingers after they were plucked and trimmed a bit and they looked like a ball of maggots in my palm. Personally I think you will do better with a tapered round tail Jason.

I'll apologize straight away for the fuzzy picture but the camera and I are not getting along today. I'll try for a better one tomorrow, but for tonight you can get the jist of what I was saying in the previous post.

Thanks Tom.  I can see how much smaller in diameter they are compared to the 1.75" Small Fry and Ice Pick (Small Fry Tail).

On a different note, you are making some killer Small Frys.  They look great.

Thanks again.
