Vacation
« on: 02/09/12 07:25 UTC »
Carole and I have been vacationing in the deep south and enjoying it LOTS. We left on the 31st of January and flew to Dallas/Fort Worth, then on to Pensacola, Florida where we stayed right on Esmabia Bay. We have read so much about the Scenic Gulfshore Highway system that we finally bit the bullet and made the trip. Hawaii was on the slate but the travel costs were ridiculous and we had vouchers from the airline for 200 dollars each if we stayed state-side, so the math worked much better here.

Thew weather was great, especially for a northern boy with freckled hide and a bald head.....partly cloudy with daytime highs right near 70 degrees. Rain was forcast every single day we were there, but we saw rain one of the days and full sun on a couple other days so I guess the weather forcasters down there are about as talented as they are up here. We had a very pleasant 8 days and I ate shrimp 6 of those days. The seafood was my downfall. I'd buy a couple pounds of shrimp a day, clean them up, throw them in the microwave in the motel room for three minutes and called it a snack while relaxing in the evening.....sort of a big shrimp cocktail. Home now, I a going thru withdrawal.

Flights were all great, and we drove over 1000 miles in total along some of the prettiest beaches I have seen outside of Hawii and watching those boys catching pompano and sharks while seeing the porpoises swim by way something else. I don't fish when we travel....its time to spend with Carole and I let her pretty much set the itinerary. But home now I have the itch developing again. Good to be home again no matter how nice the beaches are.

Glad you had a good, safe trip. My wife and I had planned a cross country road trip last summer, stopping and many of the National parks on our way to California then back to Kentucky, but plans changed and we were not able to go.

Now with the rising cost of gas I don't see that trip happening anytime soon!  :o

We are both teachers and plan a spring break trip to Guntersville during the first week of April every year we have been married. It works out perfect. Our hotel is on the water with its own dock. I can start fishing at daylight, she can sleep in and call me when she is ready to hit the water. Works out perfect!

This year our trips will be a little more challenging but a lot of fun. We now have our first baby boy, Easton. He is 4 months old and I've already got his Snoopy rod ready to be able to cast!  ;D It might still be a while though!

We're going to do the Smokey Mountains in the summer with the camper. Only a few years ago we went to the NW coast and Puget Sound following Hiway 2 from here in Minnesota all the way to the Pacific Ocean and camped in a tent along the way. Now we have the retirement card for all of the National Parks so we get in free and pay 1/2 fees for camping. That card was a savior on this last trip what with all of the National protections and park attachments we ran into. I figure that the card saved us something along the lines of 100 bucks for this trip in one way or another. The card is available to seniors for a one time fee of ten bucks and our has be a blessing from the time we got it.

Jason, we were in the Dallas/Fort Worth airport coming and going on this trip. Where is Lake Fork in relation to Dallas? I though of you while I was waiting on our flight. All told we spent six hours in Dallas and couldn't even set foot on the state's soil. Once you're in that airport past security you're IN THE AIRPORT. Period. Ma read and I did one of two things to pass my time.....look at the scenery and thank our troops as they passed by. I've always liked the Dallas Airport.

Fork is about 2 hours East of DFW Airport.

We did the Colorado / Montana road trip a few years ago while the boys were still young.  We hit Yellowstone - totally awesome trip.  It's this memories that make everything worth while.  We need to do something like this again before the boys are to old.

We've done Yellowstone four times, but then we have a nephew and wife who live just outside the NW entry [Roosevelt Entry] and have a reson to head in that direction. Try Glacier about mid July. Its unreal for beauty. Actually, the North Shore of Lake Superior is outstanding. That's right here in Minnesota and runs into lower Ontario. We have a cabin in Two Harbors, north of Duluth about 25 miles. I spend a lot of time during the summer casting the breakwater in Tow Harbor's ore harbor. Lake Trout are the target. Salmon are there too at times.

You can run right up I35 to Duluth, take US 61 north from there to Grand marias and pick up US 2 and run that all the way to the west coast. Part of that run will take you over the mountains on what is called "Going To The Sun Highway", which is Glacier Park's most outstanding feature. The highway's nickname will be understood by driving the highway itself. From West Glacier you can run right back down thru Yellowstone on your way home.
