I have seen local law enforcement agencies close off accesses to some lakes and rivers during the very early part or the extreme late end of the ice season up here, but never have I seen a whole section of the Mississippi River shut off to vehicle travel. Until today.
Our crazy winter weather [40+ degrees yesterday and 36 right now] is taking its toll on ice fishing. From Red Wing, Minnesota to half way thru Lake City, Minnesota, a distance of about 16 miles, a sheriff's department has closed all accesses to vehicle entry and forbids vehicle travel on the ice. It seems we don't have enough ice for it to safely support a motor vehicle. Of course the ideology up here is that there is no such thing as "safe ice". This won't bug me as I don't drive on ice anymore....seen way too many near drownings to risk becoming one myself. Still, in over 60 years I can't recall ever seeing this particular portion of the big river shut off like this.
Tornados in the south east, erasing drought conditions in much of Texas and Oklahoma in a day and then this ice stuff up here......what is with this crazy weather? We have friends in Portland, Oregon and they are yacking about hurricane forced winds slamming the coast in that area. This is getting nuts.
