The other Boys of Summer
« on: 06/20/18 22:25 UTC »
To be sure, it was a novelty the first time (back in 1983) B.A.S.S. launched a tournament in La Crosse. And almost 30 years later, it was a novelty again as they returned to these waters; however, the city has now largely settled into a routine with a Bassmasters event being held here four times in the last seven years.

The one caveat for this weekend's event relates to heavy rains in the recent past, which will have the great river living up to its alter-ego – The Big Muddy.  In addition to fishing chocolate milk, the river is slated to rise about a foot per day during the tournament and the current will increase 4-6x greater than normal which is going to backlash the majority of river patterns that would otherwise produce good fish.  Consequently, the most consistent (normal) fishing will be the gravy train below the spillway (that Ott DeFoe won the last event with) or lower pool backwaters (which will remain the least affected by rising and muddy waters).  Of course, plenty of other patterns could develop like off channel wing/closing dams, tributary railroad bridges, or something that is completely off of my radar.

The bottom line is this should be a very interesting tournament (at least for us river bass types), and I’m excited to see how everything develops.

I'll be watching the live broadcast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon. It's great to see how long these guys can fish without a bite! You can learn a lot by watching on the computer!

I watched live two years ago and was glad I did... if one has the time/availability to do so, there is WAY more to see/learn in multiple eight hour days than what all the footage gets trimmed down to for the actual televised show.  I'm particularly interested to see any coverage of pool 9 since I just moved here and have only fished it a couple of times.  Two years ago, Alton Jones took third by fishing pool 9, but  having to lock through really limits the number of boats on this stretch of water... this is truly underscored by the number of pros I saw fishing a wing-dam below my (new) house during the preceding weeks of practice, but only one has passed by here this morning.

Eight more boats just passed by... whether it was a difference of the first boat sitting on the pole position, rigged for higher speeds, or both, the rest of these pros were obviously in a different locking and are over a half hour behind the first boat.

The river at La Crosse sure looked filthy when we crossed on the Interstate yesterday. Actually every kind of waterway we saw yesterday between Kenosha and Rochester was dirty and high. The Mississippi is going to be bad....lots of water will be coming down given the crazy rainfall totals seen up here in Minnesota. And its still raining.

Well the cut to 50 was made last night and only 5 boats came past the house this morning... (Gary Klein, A.J. Sr. & Jr., and two others I was not quick enough to identify).  Alton has a spot down here that he fished the last few Elite events (which I'm presuming he is sharing with his son), but I do not know where GK or the others are fishing.  (I saw Skeet's boat also down here yesterday, but he is one of them that didn't make the cut and is out today.)  I'm hoping the three front runners have have cameras streaming today as they may not make the cut for tomorrow.

Been watching  ever day also. As the water is rising the bass are moving up shallow in all the slop. (frog fishing. My question is where would the walleye move? I would think they would be up tight behind the wing dams on the main river?

I was out Thursday night and started by fishing a mid-lake sand-drop for bass; the first fish was a dandy smallmouth and the second fish was a nice walleye (which I have never caught in many, many years of fishing that area). Similarly, I have a lifelong history of fishing a shallow slough to the north (for bass), but it will almost always load up with walleyes when the current is elevated.  The walleyes, just like bass, will also seek their most comfortable areas, and aside from former bass habitat, the best wing-dams for high current fishing are off the main channel, not on it (but these also could have been former bass habitat).

Yes, what a difference... I know that area extremely well, as it is usually my first and last stop when I launch from there.  It holds a lot of fish, but I would worry about sore-mouthing so many when I would be looking for a good bag the next day. (He could be just trying to prevent others from fishing it, but if that were the case, he shouldn't be yanking them).
