I seriously need to get into the product review mode here but I am going to make a couple statements here first.
I have been using the pthalate-free plastic a lot now that I have used all of the other stuff already. This plastic is something else as far as I am concerned. I have the soft formula because all I shoot are small plastics. I have to add a wee bit of softener to a 6 ounce batch but the trade-off for scortch-free and near smoke-less heating is worth it. Carole doesn't complain about odor when she sneaks into my work area either. The big thing for me is over-all ease in handling this stuff from the box to the mixing area to the curing table. Not a penny's worth of oiliness gets in the way of eye applications. The plastic doesn't have that "magnetic" attitude the original formula had either. To sum it up quick, this plastic is "IT".
Now I'll comment on this new paddltail mold. I just spent 8 hours shooting it. I've done solid colors and I have done split body colors and I have done tail one color, body another. This mold is a joy to use. The first few colors I cooked up in this mold were simple re-melts just to give the mold a test run and to see if there were any hidden "things" I had to learn while using it and the shooting went well enough that I posted some of the handiowrk here in another thread. I put the same pics in a couple other boards and my email has been lit up ever since. The response to these baits in the pics has been unreal.....hence my busy afternoon.
I have been busy trying to settle on some "stock" colors to make these baits available for sale on my tackle site and I have six of those colors a sealed deal now with a bunch left to do. Almost exclusively I have used CCM colorants to get to where I want to be with this little task and have found that recipes I have developed can be reliant on the consistancy of the colorants. I do appreciate this aspect.
The paddletail mold is a winner in my book. I have fished the baits a couple times now in the river behind our house and yesterday a nice walleye paid a visit to the jig carrying one of these baits. Not huge, but a solid 17 inches of gold. While I have not popped a crappie yet, I am confident that this bait will fill the bill nicely. Anyone here who spends time fishing crappies really should consider this mold. I haven't had it a week and already consider it a marvel.
