I’ve done okay on river smallmouth with the 3” mold I have. To be honest though I have not fished it hard. I can’t seem to give up fishing my comfort baits the small profile 3” twin tail, 3/3.5” chub grub, or the 3.5” Do-It tube.  If those aren’t producing I throw a square bill shallow diver. If all that fails to connect I start beating the water with big musky plugs. I really need to make a few trips dedicated to this bait though.

I have the smaller of the two molds and use the baits occasionally when working docks or bridge pilings in open water for crappies. I do ok with the bait. The best colors I have tried are the changeable blue-crawfish and Cutthroat trout and brown mayfly colors, all MF.

Tom

I once considered purchasing that mold but decided on the Mayday Mayfly

Which I don't regret especially come spring

I have that one too and use it under similar fishing situations with equal success.

I should clarify that my hellgrammite is not a Do-It mold. The one I have has a wider body profile. My thought was this might produce a slower fall rate allowing it to float through/past the sweet spots using a light jig head or a hook and sinker. Just my thoughts.

I’m betting the trout around here would tear that smaller Do-It hellgrammite up. Especially the bigger holdover browns and brookies.
