Hi Guys - I am new to this forum. I live in South Africa so I need info before I place my orders.
I have a question regarding hooks for my Shad head mold to swim 6 inch paddle tails. Is it feasible to use the 6/0 Mustad  32786BLN hooks for the 1,5 oz Shad head? This hook has the eye at 60 deg unlike to recommended hook at 90 deg.
please help.
Thanks

Welcome aboard Mnenu.

I'm looking at the do-it catalog and can find the shad head mold, but it only goes up to 7/16 ounce and uses a 30 degree hook.  What is the mold number or isn't it a do-it mold?

It is a Do-It mold. Item no 3328 model SHB-3-L.
It is the Shad Head Jig.
the catalogue does not show the hook I want as a recommendation but I am sure it can work.

The Gamakatsu 2234 is the same as the Eagle Claw 630 that the mold is made for. That hook will work and the 6/0 has a .066" diameter and the 32786 has a .067" diameter, very little difference. You will also have to modify the mold to fit the 60 degree hook while the Gamakatsu 2234 should fit. There is also the VMC 7152 Barbarian jig hook, it has a .068" diameter and may possibly fit that mold. Go to https://www.barlowstackle.com/   and send them an email and ask them if the Gamakatsu 2234 or the VMC 7152 will fit that mold, you can also ask about the Mustad 32786 60 degree hook. They will try them and let you know if the hooks will work. Now the 2234 has a sproat bend which you may not want but it will make the hook that much stronger and when you hook a fish it will be harder for it to throw the hook. The VMC has a deep throat design that does a great job of holding fish as well so if either of those hooks fit they should perform extremely well. Good luck to you and please don't be a stranger stick around here with us.

Sorry about that Mnenu, all I had to do was go back a page. Smalljaw is the man to dicker with on jigs anyway and he's done a great job for you.

Smalljaw and Ctom thanks for the reply. I will certainly look into what you have said and send an email. We use 6 inch paddletails here for Kabeljou - a large saltwater predator like the Mulloway and the gape needs to be wide or you miss the hook up. Must also be strong to stand up to the punishment. I am not happy with the hooks that come recommended as I find the barb to hold the plastic in place is often deformed or does not form at all when you pour the lead. Looks like the shank of the hook is causing a problem. I tried a different hook which I think is the one I mentioned above and it works like a charm and has a bigger gape.

Smalljaw - I intend to stick around even though I thousands of mile away. I like the Do-It products. I am also tying my own bucktails. I hunt a lot and use the Mt Reedbuck tails for tying.
