All ears.....
« on: 06/27/19 13:39 UTC »
This guy wandered into the cabin yard on Tuesday round 4 in the afternoon and sat down at the deer trough for some sunflower seed. Right around 125 pounds he was in the middle of the road of bear sizes we had visit this trip. A smaller bear, maybe 80 pounds, probably just kicked away from his mother came in several times over three days and chowed on the bird seed as did a very large solid black animal that was easily over the 300 pound mark. Both the big and small bears were pretty skittish but the one in the picture was likely one of two years ago's pups that had been at the cabin yard since birth and was very relaxed and not nervous in the least. Fun having wildlife stop by to share our time there.

There's a trail that runs back into the woods about a half mile and we found some super fresh moose tracks leave the yard and go straight back on the trail. We checked the lake to see if it was around there but nada. Just having the tracks there is exciting.

Awesome.  :) They are rare here in South Alabama and I had one on my game cam during the summer. I thought it was cool until he tore my feeder up.  :o

Long before the digital era I got a picture of 19 bear in the yard at one time. We had seven of those feeders seen here in this pic around the perimeter of the yard and a covered hay feeder about twenty yards back of the troughs. The standing feeders got whole shell-corn. That hay feeder I'd fill up with acorns I raked from city parks and took up....ten, twelve 50 pound sacks full of them. It was a circus in the yard. I'd go out to mow and make a run around the edge of the yard first and when I came to a feeder the bear would just walk off until I finished the trimming around that feeder, then I'd move on.

A person can learn a lot from bears if he spends enough time around them. They're very similar to people....they have moods and body English just like we do. Some are ok to be around and some one might not want to trust. Just like people.

That big, solid black, bear was beautiful. Not a lick of brown or white on it, just solid coal black and its hide was in superb condition...just glistened in the sun.

The wildlife are way cool. We often get these in my yard in Alaska. This one trotted through and stopped when I squeaked at her just long enough to get a photo. This was today and you can see the smoke in the background from the Swan Lake Fire in the background. Hot and dry up here and doesn’t look like much rain help in the future.
