Keeping bugs out of my jigtying stuff
« on: 08/09/19 04:47 UTC »
Hello
I did take up on tying jigs last year and i did discover that i did have "a litle bit" of fly tying stuff laying around from before...
But i did also did discover that the old moth balls was outlawed here in Norway in 2012 due to cancer risk.
Now i see that they are selling cedar wood to keep the bugs away.
Does this really work?
I remember reading something abouth saving the shavings when you made wooden arrows and put among your clothes, so if cedar keep them away i got enough arrows to cut up for this.
And how long does this work?

Haven’t had a issue with bugs in fly tying material hair or feathers . So I don’t really know if arrow or cedar makes a difference. Sorry I couldn’t help.
May your days be filled with sun shine and you always have a tight line. AMEN

I know cedar keeps bugs away from clothes. It is one of the reasons that cedar lined closets were popular and why they line hope chests with cedar.

Anything (tying related) that I'm worried about bugs getting into, I keep in my game freezer.

Small Jaw is correct Cedar is the least offensive thing to use . Old timers used moth balls , however the odor permeates everything.

Are you only using store bought materials???  If you're hunting and getting more you need to wash it correctly and put it through a quarantine process to make sure of no bugs!!   And clean tying materials are ALWAYS nicer to tie with!!  These totes are full of tying materials both store bought and wild that have been cleaned  No bugs yet and I keep a check of them
