Just starting

When I was a kid my Dad always poured his own sinkers.  He's gone now and left me a bunch of lead.  My grandsons really got into fishing this summer so I thought it would be fun if I could make them sinkers with lead that 'Pops' gave me.  I've started reading up on what I need and need to do.  I've seen a few folks mention that I should make ingots with old lead the get rid of the impurities as the first step.  So guys, how do I do this, assuming it's a necessary step?  What do I pour the molten lead into to make an ingot?  Thanks for your guidance. Any other words of wisdom are also appreciated.

Welcome to the Do-It forums Buster. Sinkers are pretty basic. Heat your lead and fill the mold(s). If you check the DoIt online store you’ll find a handy little 4 pound pot that’s plenty for some casual casting and safe enough to get kids started in casting. As for ingots, they tend to be a product of convenience and not required, but handy if you’re handling lots of lead. A 9X9 inch cake pan can be filled with 1/4” of lead and when cool can be cut into two inch strips with a tin snips. This is as good of an ingot as you’ll likely ever need.

When you melt the lead the first time if you see lots of crud on the top you may want to clean it but don’t clean it in the house. Take it to the garage and keep the doors open as you be making smoke for a short while. Heat the lead the toss in a couple 3/4” square pieces of paraffin and stir it in. When the smoke stops, skim the lead and call it cleaned. This doesn’t have to be done often after the initial cleaning, but as you add lead you may want to as the dross starts to appear.

This is a great way to expand on your fishing and a great way for a dad and child to spent time together.

Again, welcome aboard!
