why does NO ONE make a mold for net weights?
« on: 02/20/20 03:01 UTC »
hey Do-it molds, if your paying attention, riddle me this... why doesnt Do-it make a mold for cast net weights, or why doesnt anyone make a mold for cast net weights? dont believe me? go Google it, look around on ebay, look everywhere... they're just not available. WHY?!? i know im not the only one in the world that makes their own cast nets and wants to make their own net weights.

this all started about a month ago when I finished my latest cast net, and it was time to put weights on it. i used to save the weights off of old cast nets to put on new ones, well guess what? didnt have any old weights. started trying to find a mold to make net weights and I just could not find one. after looking for days on websites from here to New Zealand to South Africa i could not find a mold to make net weights. finally after days of searching i found an OLD palmer net weight mold. its old and doesn't work very well, certainly no where near as well as my bank sinker and jig head molds that are Do-it molds. this thing is tiny, it only makes two weights at a time and it gets HOT! It has 4 holes and its "supposed" to pour two weights at the same time, has one pour hole that splits to two cavities but that works at best a quarter of the time. it gets clogged up or only half pours, its just a mess. did i mention it gets HOT! like burning my hand through a welding glove hot.

Do-it, if you're paying attention, in my opinion theres a huge hole in the market for net weights. you can buy all the lead weights you want for nets, but lets face it, we're fisherman and we like to do things ourselves.

a 4 to 5 cavity mold of 1oz weights with a 1/4 pull pin would be super simple and i know im not the only one who wants to make their own net weights.

im still on the hunt for a better mold, and my next step if i cant find a decent one is to modify an egg sinker mold by drilling it out for a bigger pin, it wont be perfect like a specific made do it mold, but it will be better than what i have now.

hope to hear back from you

I'm guessing that there would be a very small demand for a mold of that nature and why there's nothing available for molds. It looks to be a fairly simple design so one could actually make a mold using the mold blank available at Do-It and some brass rod for the holes.

Your ideas and opinions certainly don't fall on deaf ears.  Welcome to the forum.  That is something that has gone through some of the early stages in our new product development conversations but has been tabled in the past for lack of demand, as some of the others have mentioned.  We will certainly keep this in mind moving forward. We appreciate your input.

thanks for the replies, however a blank mold doesn't do me any good since I dont happen to have a machine shop, and buying weights defeats the purpose of making my own net.

i think if someone at Do-It is actually paying attention, they will see theres a hole in the market and they should try to fill it. if do-it is an international company then the possibilities expand exponentially. i asked my cousin in Argentina that lives near the coast to find me a mold, nothing. i asked people here in Louisiana and came up with nothing. i asked a friend from Vietnam and the same thing. its still a mystery to me why seemingly they just dont seem to be produced.

i own do-it molds, their fantastic molds and make fantastic castings. the quality weights that do it molds make is the quality i want to put on something that took me months to make with my own two hands and a lot of time. my next option is going to be to take an egg sinker mold and try to drill out the center hole and hope for the best. its not what I want to do but if its a permanent or semi permanent solution then that's better than what I have now.

i still hope to see a net weight mold from do-it in the future because I know id buy two just to make sure I had atleast one.

I have done this to make a pile of Texas rig decoy weights that would accept .090 string cutter line. Wasn’t that difficult and made my own pull pin. I just used an appropriate sized rat tail file for the stock steel sized pull pin I wanted.

Same thing I was thinking. Problem solved. It's sort of what we all do on modifying molds. We make them to our likings.

A 1/4” pin you will need to coat the pin with a bar of soap to make it easier to remove the pin.

After watching this video, I'd just buy this mold  https://store.do-itmolds.com/Egg--Slip-SinkerbrSz-38-34_p_627.html

Start slowly drilling the mold pin hole larger and larger until you get the size desired, Then get a Teflon rod in the correct diameter to fit.

This post took more effort than modifying this mold...

And if you wanted it to weigh more...just leave the sprue attached?

Nah... They offer so many more bigger egg sinkers to choose from....  https://store.do-itmolds.com/Egg--Slip-Sinker-Molds_c_168.html

But you want a mold that has a whole row of the size you need.

I did similar for mods for decoy weights as well.
