New Injector - Need Feedback
« on: 04/09/12 15:43 UTC »
We are designing a new injector and would like your feedback.  Here is what I know I would like to see for sure.

1) It will hold at least 9 oz of plastic
2) It will incorporate a locking pin on the nozzle
3) The wall thickness of the injector will be thicker than the 4 oz, but not so thick it will take a long time to heat up (looking for a happy medium)
4) It will be available in early May

Is there anything you would like to see in a new injector?

Thanks,

Jason

1) It will hold at least 9 oz of plastic:  OK
2) It will incorporate a locking pin on the nozzle: An absolute MUST
3) The wall thickness of the injector will be thicker than the 4 oz, but not so thick it will take a long time to heat up (looking for a happy medium): My personal opinion is that I would like an injector that HOLDS the heat! Even if it takes some effort to heat it up
4) It will be available in early May: OK

Could you create the "happy medium"....but also design a sleeve (that could act as extra insulation) as a accessory?? I wrap my current injectors in a neoprene sleeve...(ok...maybe it looks suspiciously like a beer can cozy!)....but that is NOT very hot plastic friendly if I push the injector in a tad to far into the cup.

Maybe a really nice looking CCM neoprene cover with a high temp plastic collar on the front?

Love the ideas, as for the heat retention I recommend coating the outside of the cylinder with CeraKote. It should hold the heat until the injector is empty.

Great feedback.  Can you tell me more about CeraKote?

Make a sleeve from the Silicone used to make the measuring cups?

I can check, but I think we need to be looking at off the shelf solutions, or my gut is they will be cost prohibitive.  Something that might be helpful is a description of the problem.  For me, I just want to get my injector hot without having to heat it some way.  Once it's hot (one or two injections) it stays that way until I stop using it.

Are you having problems with your injector not staying hot?  Is it the 4 oz. or a larger one?

Not staying hot isn't a problem...  Once I get my injector hot it stays hot, sometimes too hot to handle if i have been shooting alot of plastic..  I wonder if they are looking for insulation against the outside getting too hot..

Yep.....

Both....

Remember...those of us up here in the Northland...when we have a window open for ventilation ...can have a real problem with molds and injectors cooling off really quick! For example, tonight...when I was playing mad bait maker...the temp outside is 39 and the air coming across my work area is pretty cool! Image the air temp when it's below zero outside!

Plus...if it's going to be a big 9oz injector...it's going to take me awhile to fill up all those molds...and I don't want the tip to clog!

And yes...those injectors get really hot after a few rounds...but that is what gloves are for (beside the other safety issues).

If you could incorporate an insulating outer wall it would be a nice .   9 ounces of plastic is a pretty big heat sink.

Jason, I would be more than happy to send you multiple pages through email if that is what you prefer. CeraKote comes in many different types, ranging from firearm coating to exhaust coating. The NIC Industries High temp CeraKote will withstand temps of up to 1700 degrees, while making the existing exterior temperature drastically lower. Both problems that have been stated here I believe can be fixed with the coating, not to mention you can get it in many colors/styles and toss the CCM logo in if you wanted to. Coating the exterior of the cylinder with the high heat treatment would allow the interior of the injector to stay at a higher temp longer and leaving the exterior cooler to the touch. Only thing I can suggest is finding someone who coats it locally and trying it out. Here is the NIC Ind. site:

Thanks Drew. I found a semi close authorized shop and will see about getting one done. I'll be excited to see the difference.

Thank you,

Jason

Anytime, hope it works. It would really change the game seeing how not only the cylinder but the shaft, handle and nozzle can be coated as well. With this coating the applications are limitless. WTB CCM Orange injector with CCM logo in black!

Make it a larger diameter.  Less wall area for cooling the plastic and also less headroom for a larger injector volume.  I like the thinner wall better than a thicker wall like the BT injectors, but that hurts you on adding a locking pin.

Thanks,

Scott

I do not know if or how this could work, but would there be a way to control how much plastic comes out? exp. One click equals one once. Maybe even like a caulk gun... Your tube and gun could be totally separate. This might even allow you to have two colors going at once...interchangeable. Trying to think outside of the box.
