Temp/Time for warming a mold
« on: 04/23/12 07:14 UTC »
What temp & what amount of time should I warm my mold to? I warmed it in the oven when I attempted these & i still can see the little line where the 2 colors meet. I may be wrong but i thought warming would  make them more even without the little ''dip'' being there where they meet. Anymore advice/tips would be appreciated. thanks guys!

I've read, in a few places on this Forum, that preheating molds by just about any other means than with plastic can eventually cause pits in the Aluminum.  I've been keeping small scraps of plastic and saving them in 1 spot, for melting and pouring onto the Interior Surfaces of molds, for preheating.

Just from what I've read (I have no experience to back it up), I would advise AGAINST preheating molds in the oven (I've even read about guys putting them on the BBQ Pit).

hmmmm. When you pour it on how are you doing it,just laying the 2 halves cavity side up & just covering it with what you melted?

And those are some Fine Baits, Bro.  If that's the 3.5", I have that same mold.  In Inland Saltwater, it's proportions are good for a Mullet or Cocahoe imitation.  I like them colors, too...

Yes, Sir.  Open, Cavity-Side Up, pour it on...leave it set a little while to cool and to transfer the heat to the mold, and peel it up.  Be careful though.  On a cold mold, it'll set/cool fairly quick, but after that, let it set a little longer than the 1st...if You grab the plastic to peel it and it hasn't cooled enough...when hot plastic is still pretty hot it sticks to anything, You can't shake it off, You can't hardly rub/wipe it off.  Let the plastic do it's thing then just peel it up...make sure it's cool enough though!!!

If the baits aren't separating at the line it won't make a hill of beans . Fish ain't going to care . We are all perfectionists in our own way . Most fishermen aren't that critical. I warm my molds through the injection ports with a heat gun . Haven't had to many Issues and I don't heat them but to about 110 or so .

Nice looking baits.  That back color is wicked ( as Bareknuckle  commented ).  I preheat my molds with a low wattage hair dryer just to knock the cold off them.

Ay, ask away!  That's one of the many good things about the CCM Forum...there is some serious experience and knowledge on here.  When You're dealing with the things we are, ask, ask, ask.  There is much to learn (for everyone), and Safety is #1.

Roger on'nat, Dob!  At 21, You're well on Your way.  I think I'm going out to the shop and shoot some plastic, coffee in hand.

I'ma borrow that Back Color for a second...  :D  ...think I'll go CCM Watermelon with some CCM Pearl Green, and probably a little CCM .015" Silver or Sea Green flake...for Saltwater.  I've got some new spots I'm about to hit, chasing Specks and Flounder.  Thank You, Sir!  8)
