Crappies were a snappin this morning....
« on: 04/05/24 11:36 UTC »
My buddy and I hit the Mighty Mississippi backwaters for a couple hours very this morning and did very well on crappies. Purple 2-1/2" Fry on a 1/16 keeper ball head fish about 6 feet deep on 17 feet of water.  Light hitting suckers early on but hey decided to hit in earnest as it got lighter. We're supposed to see another day, or morning at least, like this morning so I am planning on going back for round two. Its hard to pass up fishing when the weather and fish are both on the same page, so.....

Glad to hear you were able to get out and found some willing participants. If our waters settle down by Sunday I’m hopefully going to make it out. With as much rain as we got this week I’m not expecting big numbers though.

That sounds like fun!

I haven't been out in a good while. When I have wanted to go, the weather wouldn't cooperate.  I had hoped to go catch a few American Shad this year, but we got a bunch of rain and that muddied everything up. The power company had to open the gates on the dam, to release the water coming down into the lakes, and that made the currents hard to fish too.

Maybe I'll get the chance next year.

I'm reading a few reports of folks beginning to find sone Crappies & Shellcrackers in the lake, so it's got me itching to go!  ;D

Well heck..... I hit the spot again this morning real early only to find the wind getting up about 7am and was blowing large mats of slop into the area I needed to cast. I spent more time cleaning crud off the rod, line and jigs than I did fishing. I managed to catch three vey nice crappies for lunch today and a mess of lesser crappies.

Had to laugh as another dude showed up about 7 and sat down with is dog, three rods and a bucket full of minnows and I guess another bucket for fish. For an hour I cast along some vertical structure that he was trying to get to and my purple/chartreuse 2-1/4" fry was doing a good job of catching while in an hour and a half I saw him bring in one dink Rock Bass. He finally couldn't take it any more and came over to see what I was using. When I showed him the fry he said, "That thing is all you have on that jig?" "Yup", as I commenced to bring in three more smaller crappies and one of the larger ones. I left him with a jig and a fry when I packed it in. Now I wonder if he even tied it on.

Very seldom will a fish not eat live bait. But this proves you got to put it where he wants to eat it or he's not going to touch it. I know in my home lakes pan fish that swim out in open water get eaten by musky so they stay tight to cover.
