Scents
« on: 05/12/12 16:27 UTC »
I was wonder if anyone is using different scents with the same bait?  If the conditions, time of day, weather - overcast-bluebird etc, time of yr is the same would a specific scent produce more fish?  I have seen several scents..but what is anise?  doesn't sound like it would smell very good.

Also, do you cook the scent into the bait or do you put them in the bag?  I cooked some up and have good success, 5#, and a couple of 3#ers.  I am partial to colors but I associate the color with where I am fishing.

I use Jason's craw+anise & do pretty good on it.I add it during packaging & it scents them & lets me move the baits around to get them places neatly. When i was 16-18 years old there use to be this craw oil scent id get that had real crawfish sediment in the bottom along with a really strong craw scent.I haven't seen it in forever,it use to be sold local. Your ? about time of day/year I haven't noticed a scent shining more during certain times.I do believe that scent can't hurt,i feel that if anything it will help  & give the fish something to target in on kinda like a shark does to a blood trail. I feel if there's a scent trail & you're around fish, they will pick up on it or they can target the bait quicker.

Anise is an middle eastern origin herbaceous plant.  The seeds are used as a flavoring, as is the oil extract.  The smell is very much like licorice ( a root ).  It has been used in fish attractants for a long time.  Many like the smell; I do.
One of the reasons I do not add any scent to my baits as I inject them is so I can put different scents on them as the are fished.  Some days one scent seems to work better; and the next time a different scent seems to be what they prefer.  Also, where  I am fishing will impact what scent I try.  Around rip rap; craw fish;   ---  open water; shad.

Garlic is a somewhat newcomer to the scents arena. Garlic is a bulb producing plant in the onion family.  From the middle east as well I think.  Many scents contain garlic.  I like it best in spaghetti or on Italian rolls  ;D.
Spike it plastic colorings has a garlic line that is popular ( and strong ).

I always use scent.  I have only been pouring for about 6 months but always put a couple drops in each batch.  When I am on the water I always use smelly jelly. I am on the water a minimum 3 days a week and have seen it make a difference  Some days it seems will hit anything other days they need the extra attractant.  When you add up all your costs to fish I'm not going to skimp on an expense as small as that.  Last Friday we had over 50 smallies and a dozen walleyes in 4.5 hours.  My partner refused to put on the smelly jelly until I had 3 fish in 4 casts and he had zero.  We were using the same bait and throwing in the same eddy.  After we had been hammering them a good bit he again tried no scent and caught less fish than he had been.  He was using garlic/craw and I was using straight craw.

I have also had good results with the Smelly Jelly line of attractants.  I am trying the CCM Upperhand Hawg Sauce currently.  Based on the "proof in pictures", I would listen to  susquehannasean.
