What color?
« on: 07/16/12 12:23 UTC »
Trying to match a color for a friend of mine. Bait is a old Norton paddle tail that has been discontinued the color is solid and from couple feet away appears black but if you put it under a good light and cut it open. It is a very dark red with .015 fire red glitter. Cannot even get close with any of the colors I have now. Red is too red black is to black. It is not a highlight color. Do not know what color to order. Would post a picture but it just looks like a black bait. He would atleast like it close to the right color. He gave me three colors to work on nailed two of them but this one is kicking my butt. Any ideals?

This is a color JR makes for us that sounds like it may be close to what you are looking for.  The bottom is obviously red, but the top is a super dark red with red flake.  I don't have his recipe, but know it just has black and red colorant with red flake in it (I'm going to guess around a 3 or 4 to 1 ratio - black / red).

Ya. I would say start with black and add red to taste.

All it does when I try that is make purple? went ahead and took a picture keep in mind just did it with my camera phone. When I took the baits into the sun it hit me this might be a Red motor oil. The motoroil I have is not the correct one but dident there use to be a red motoroil color. Kind of had to tell because color is so solid.

Red and blue make purple.  You may need a new black if you are getting purple when mixing red and black.

Jason it is X2 black and reg CC red. Middle color is 12 drops black 2 drops red. Top one went 15 or 16 drops black trying to darken it. I notice the more I use the black the weaker it seems to get. When I first started using it 2 drops would turn 4 oz so dark you could not see thru it.
Now it does not seem as strong. Can you see the purple in picture? I will go clean the glass good and try it again.

I can't see "through" that Stingray Grub since I'm not there, but because I'm able to see some flake a shallow depth into the plastic, and seeing what color Plastic the Flake is Reflecting, I would say that's just a Dark Smoke with Red Flake...and of course a Chartreuse Tail.

Try just a Dark Smoke and go from there.  Maybe add ONE drop of Red at a time if "Just Smoke" isn't quite right.

Think I need to take a break its starting to get to me. Just trying to finish up before have to go back to work for 14 days. Took the lid off of the x2 black and took a small screwdiver and mixed it real good. Poured 4 oz added 6 drops black and 1 drop of red half of where I was the cup before. Cooked it. Came out SOLID BLACK added 4 more oz of plastic cooked it again pure SOLID black. Put 10 drops of red just for fun to see what it did. Could not even tell put anything in it.

That's that X2!  From what I've read, I'm reluctant to try it ONLY because I'd have to start over in my recipes.

I'm scheduled to go back offshore, myself, tomorrow...for 14 days, out of Venice, if nothing changes (it can always change in the oilfield).  In my standard Black/Blue with standard CCM Colorant...3.5 oz.s Plastic, 10 drops standard CCM Black, 1 Dash .040" Navy Blue flake.

Yea, definitely take a break from it.  Don't let it work You up, Bro.

I just talked to Alex and he said he does the red first, then black to taste.  He is going to go make it with X2 Black and MF Red (regular red) and with the X2 red.

Good catch on the black - X2 still needs mixed from time to time.

One of us will post pics and a recipe in a bit.

That was an interesting exercise...  I don't mind admitting when I'm wrong, and sure enough, if you add a little black to red you get purple (maybe more of a violet)...   So much for the color wheel.

I posted this in the color cookbook as well.  This should get you really close (within a drop or 2) of what you are looking for:

It is a little blacker looking in person.  CCM JR busted these out.

(Baits to the right)
8 oz Plastic
3 Drops X2 Red
18 Drops X2 Black
1/4 tsp. .015 Red glitter

or

(Baits to the left - by thumb)
8 oz Plastic
30 Drops Regular Red
24 Drops X2 Black
1/4 tsp. .015 Red glitter

Let us know how it turns out for you.

Jason, You said "when You add Black to Red".  I'm assuming You're starting with Red then adding Black...?  Could this be a similar Principal, to Acid and Water?  When mixing Acid and Water, I remember it as A&W Rootbeer...add Acid to Water, NOT Water to Acid.  Is the Resulting Color different if You add Red to Black, NOT Black to Red...or vice-versa?

We actually did it both ways with the X2 and it didn't make a difference.  You can put 10 drops of black in 8 oz. of plastic and get a really nice dark black.  From that point, even a drop of red makes a big difference.  It was pretty interesting.  This is a color Alex has been making for me for around a year now.  It's a great color.

Are those 4 inch carrots or the new 4.5 inch Finesse carrot?
