worm oil/scents
« on: 08/18/12 10:31 UTC »
What is worm oil made from?  What is the base and is anyone making it themselves...etc.  Scents...any new ones out there that is effective.  I use , garlic, crawfish, and anise..all easily bought.  My son wants to use coffee...and we have read that you can just add coffee grounds to the plastic, but I would think that the grounds would bleed.  Talk to me guys.

Coffee might not be the best thing to throw in a bag of plastics. I wouldn't do it. Then too I'm not a huge fan of scents and lean towards thinking they are gimmics used to net anglers, not fish. Coffee has natural oils in it and those oils can combine with the oils in the plastic and I think may change colors in lighter products. It might fly in black or browns if a person were to try it.

If I use any scent other than what is found in "Gulp" products, it is Cod Liver Oil. The Cod Liver Oil is a natural fish product and it will immulsify [mix with water] which makes it a scent that fish can actually smell. If the oil found in a scent will not immulsify or mix with water, fish  would not be able to sense it.

Gulp doesn't actually use a "scent". Gulp is an attractant that uses a number of chemically complex ingredients that either mimic a food source or the secretion created by small baitfish that is secreted thru the slime on said bait fish to show fear. I think that's what Gulp focuses on. Its effectiveness is top shelf because it is a water-based product and the baits found floating in the juice will dry out if left out of the jar or out of the water. Gulp juice is available as a spray-on, but it will NOT work in plastics since there is no safe way to incorporate it into plastic.

The Cod Liver Oil is a doable scent and I have added it to several styles of crappie and sunfish plastics just to give it a try but I just as well in the catching department using baits without any scent cooked in. With the Gulp it is like any other bait, some days you can't buy a bite using it while on other days the whole day would have been trashed had I not used it. I carry my Gulp every time I hit the water. Period. I also carry a small dropper bottle of the Cod Liver Oil and both are in addition to like 6 boxes of different profiles of plastic.

A word of caution regarding both the Cod Liver Oil and the Gulp juice: don't get it all over yourself or your clothes if you have intentions of stopping after fishing for a cold one or two. The bar keep might usher you out the door. And definitely wash your mitts after using these for a day of fishing before you get home. Trust me.

You can buy the coffee scent for plastics.  The scent is dark so its best used with darker colors. Ha its actually good smelling scent!

So If I read this properly gulp is not something you should put on the baits when packaged? I think I read it as it would dry the baits out?

Not sure what Gulp is but it fishs just as good as dead shrimp.
If you leave it laying out it does shrival up but if put back in package its good.

PS: I Do not fish with gulp! Me hates using live or dead baits for that matter think gulp fits into this catagory but my wife does not feel the same she used a swimming mullet under a popping cork and outfished me last trip. thought about switching after she was 4 or 5 fish up on me but I held my ground and stayed busy taking her fish off the hook for her.

412....

Gulp products, other than the juice itself, will dry up big time and are shot for use at that point. Once shriveled and dry they will not come back to life by putting them back in the juice. They are shot. You will not meet with good results if you put gulp products in a standard tackle box comparment UNLESS that box or comparment is sealed to keep fluids from leaking and/or the baits from drying out. Some of the old PowerBait products could be ressurected by soaking again, but not the Gulp.

You can put a different bait, like some of your plastics, into the Gulp jar with Gulp baits and juice, however you'll probably see the plastics go opaque, but still usable and the plastics won't hurt the Gulp baits a bit. Remeber though that the plastic probably will not absorb enough of the juice to make much difference in the performance of the plastic.

Something I have found that works wonders when using the Gulp spray is to thread a small cotton pom-pom on the line with a needle, then tie on the jig. White works fine. Spray your juice on that little ball of cotton and go fishing. The Gulp will stay on that cotton ball for some time and if you need to refresh it, just pinch the cotton ball to get the water out and re-spray it. I found the little pom-poms at a hobby lobby. Try this if you want to see a minnow bite go absolutely bonkers.
