Question about a Mold Making Company
« on: 10/30/12 09:04 UTC »
Can anyone tell me anything about a Mold Making Company called Jacobs Baits? Has anyone on this forum ever ordered from this guy? I requested a sample of a bait, that he makes a mold for called a Snake Head Swimmin Chunk, and was told that he did NOT have  any samples. I implied that I could potentially order 3 or 4 molds, if I liked what I saw, only to be told that no samples were available. Whats wrong with that picture? Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated, before I plan on spending any money on them. Thanks!

I have 4 of Jacobs molds and have never really had any problem with him, but in talking with others I hear a lot of what Andrew is saying.

Like Caney's molds, his shoot fine and without any issues.

Not every mold maker is going to have what you want so you do have to look around and weigh your options. To be sure, Jason and his family here  get most of my business but Rick has some designs that I can't get here.

Don't know about his new molds but I probs with dents in some of his older molds.  He used too small of a runner not to mention the 1/4" sprue.

I've bought molds from 4 companies...ended up owning only CC's molds...sold the others.  I have had (and still have) small issues w/some of CC's minnow-type  baits (stinger, swimshad, superfry) having dents in side that probabaly is mostly due to my clamping. But i have clamped/shot them every way you can, at every temp...and some still have dents!!

The big thing on Jacobs molds is if it has the small sprew opening... you have to have one of his injectors. Some of the new molds now have a larger opening to take anyone's injector. Check the size before ordering. I have one of his injectors and several of his molds. I have no complaints and will buy more molds from him in the future. He makes a three inch solid head tube that you can't get anywhere else for one example.

I did look at it on his site (been trying to get jason to use same skirted process on some of his baits for months. I'm sure he's all over it! 8))  Saw this process in a mold that was being made for another (japanese) company...looked good!!

Anyone have experience with the 2 1/4" Twister Tail Grub (Frayed Tail) - 6 cavity mold from Jacob's?  http://stores.jacobsbaits.com/-strse-28/2-1-fdsh-4%22-Twister-Tail/Detail.bok  It's the only non-CCM mold on my list, so if it has a smaller sprue and I have to spend $50 on a seperate injector I'll be less likely to buy it.

For those who are worried about the injection port on his molds can rest. Clamp the mold shut and use a countersink bit to open the opening up slowly. Others I know have used a 5/8 inch drill bit to open the port too.

All these little things....use some ingenuity.

I ask this honestly, should you have to do that to a mold you've paid good money for??? 8)

My buddy Wilks bought a Jacob's mold for his father in law.  The sprue opening is too small to use a normal injector.  Wilks tried it and wound up burning himself.  He did buy an injector from Jacob's as well, but figured his father in law could keep the injector since it is his mold.  Jacob's does sell adaptors so you can use regular injectors with his molds.  Have not bought one yet though.
