Carrots in the cold...
« on: 11/04/12 18:58 UTC »
My buddy and I went out (here in northeast PA) to try out some of the new 5 and 6" skinny carrots I have been making. It was brutal conditions with the temp around 40, which wasn't too bad except that the occasional wind gusts were numbing. We hit two small area lakes and my buddy pulled this monster out from in front of the boat dock that is in the background. The bite on this one was subtle with the water temp being around 44 degrees.

The fish: 5 lb 8 oz (which is a real nice fish for Pennsylvania).
Bait: 5" skinny carrot fished weightless w/ trokar 3/0
The receipe: 4 oz plastic, 20 drops X2 watermelon, 2 drops black (to darken w/ HD additive), 2 Tbsp HD sink, black flake, blue flake, 1/2 tbsp anise hog scent, little bit of softener.

We are using the 5 and 6 skinny w/ the HD added and loving it. No more salt! Love the durability and ease of use when pouring. Colors are a little lighter so I have been adding a touch of black to get the colors where I like them.

We do well with the carrots in the cold here in Indiana too.  If we catch a fish on a carrot this month and next. That will be a fish on a carrot every month this year.

My brother in law lives just outside Indianapolis (west side). Are you close to that? Is the fishing good in Indiana? I have considered taking my boat next time I visit.

This is a great post!  We get conditions, bait type, color recipe, and HD review!
Awesome post, Chase.  Thank you! :)

It's not great buys its not bad.
I'm fifty miles south of Indy. There is a lake down here that it takes a 24 pound bag to win a spring tournament.

Hey, Pieter-
Then why don't you try rigging up a carrot on your line but just hanging it over the surface of the water in front of your boat and see if they'll follow you around the lake.   :P :P :P ;D ;D

Yeah, 40 and calm isn't too bad. 40 with heavy chill winds is brutal. It sucks the heat right out of you. We're talking 15+ mph.

I don't pretend to be tough about the cold. I hate it. It makes nothing more enjoyable when fishing. I only get out there cause no one else does and the chance for big ones.

I've lived in Minnesota for nearly 62 years and still can't say I like the cold nor can I say I'm tough about it. More than anything I can honestly say that I don't like the precipitation that comes with the cold. Rain is one thing and doesn't require shoveling. Snow and ice....Canada, Siberia, China and the poles can have that stuff.

Cold isn't something that a person gets accustomed to, they adapt to it and it sounds as though you do a good job.
