Amen...VERY Well said, Mr. Tom.

I started gearing up to make tackle as a self-employment venture, then it grew as my mind filled the Drawing Board.  Alot of Jason's Designs are absolutely in-line with my tastes and style, and address SO many of my complaints about the commercial baits we've used through the years.  Being able to throw colors that are what I think they should be, is worth it's weight in diamonds.  Ultimately, this has turned out to be a "hobby" with the potential to make a few bucks, but one has to sell it to see dollars.  I'm not limited by what's popular and what's available...and many times, what's popular/hot isn't available because they're bought before You burned the time and gas to get there.  There are savings here.  I can go to any given "tackle shop", even Bass Pro or Cabela's, and more often than not even they can't get in my wallet...most of what's carried is new-fangled and a Profit Margin, not so much what I catch fish on because apparently what the fish have been biting, has somehow gone out of style.  Oh how I wish I could make my own...bdddding, "this is Jason..."

This CCM Forum is 2nd-to-None...there is +T+ reason for that...!  I've read through many others, usually as a result of a search, and am "amazed" at so much that's said...the literal mean-ness and negativity are astounding.  The Members here are truly my Family Away From Family.

Being able to make Jigheads to my specs, WAAAY cheaper than what I could ever buy them for is fantastic.  Jigheads, 1/8 oz. with Black Nickle Medium Wire Long Shank hooks would cost $1+ apiece (if You could find them), I make them for a fraction of that, even counting the propane I burn to do it.  Most companies seem to have went to heavy-wire hooks...other companies use what's cheap and usually tinned, which is bright.  Black Nickle is salt/corrosion resistant and way less noticeable...and You'll pay dearly for it off the shelf.  I guess I'd have to say that, at the end of the day, I pour, and pour for, Quality.

I think Tim said it first...you can't beat getting bit on something you made.  I've been tying flies since the early 70's and have my own fly tying room devoted to storing dead animal parts and flies I will never have time to use.  I've been pouring my own jig heads for the last 5 or 6 years.  I've got a couple hundred pounds of lead in the garage waiting to get melted down into a 1/8 ounce jig head.  I've only been pouring plastic for a little over a year.  I've got over 70 different molds and hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of poured baits.

Call it an illness if you want, but I call it a hobby.  It sure keeps me off the streets and out of bars and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Isn't lead illegal where you live?...treehuggers :P LOL

I am enjoying everyone's replies and I hope others are enjoying the read too. We still have a lot more members if they wish to add something. Thanks all for taking time to reply.

For me it may just be a fad.I change hobbies like men change their underwear. I reload rifle ammo, metal detecting, antler carving, Facebook, and built a home wood working shop in the garage, any many more.Several reasons why I do this, 1)  I can afford it  2) I`m not in the bars  3) I can`t stand to sit around and watch TV   4) three years ago we found out my wife of 33 yrs. has Alzheimer's and I need to be home most of the time to help her with everything. Hunting & fishing have been my passions. Every year for 30 yrs. I went hunting in another state other than Michigan.Fished in Canada 10yrs. in a row with 8 guys on a house boat trip. Now days I stay close to home, and escape into the garage to experiment with my latest fad, pouring plastic`s.  I have to admit, this one might stick around for awhile.I`ve been making baits and giving them to a few guys in a fishing club I belong to. Next week is the big show,I`m bringing a pile of the baits to the club meeting, and showing them to everybody, that`s why my frogs need to look good,(white belly). 5) Its this forum, you people are awesome! I enjoy reading everything being posted (even the food recipes),which reminds me,I need to post my walleye lasagne recipe.  When you southern guys post,I can hear the accent in your voices. lol. I don`t know what the future holds,I`ll be 62 in 4 yrs. and I`m going to retire, and hand over the family business,( I own a auto body repair shop) to my son. Third generation. "We meet by Accident" Thanks for listening, live for today, and tell your family you love them! fsh4fun.

Thank you for sharing.  It's amazing how many of us struggle with different challenges in our families (the CCM family included).  Nothing will change your perspective faster than a loved one hurting.  My heart and prayers go out to you and your family.

On a personal note, thank you for setting an example by being a man of integrity and honoring your wife through tough times.  There are others on here that are in a similar boat and I have the utmost respect for you and the decisions you've made.

Jason

Great topic and also great stories by everyone!  Here is mine.  There were 4 of us who went in together and bought a plastics making starter kit from Jann’s as a way to beat winter cabin fever.  We all love fishing, but none of us ice fish.  We set a date and got together in January and had a plastics making day.  I posted the results of our get together on a local fishing board I am heavily involved with.  People started asking us if they could buy some of the lures we were making.  We really didn’t intend to sell the lures, we were making them for ourselves.  We bought some more of the cheap plastic molds from Jann’s and again people kept coming to us asking if they can buy them.  The site owner of the fishing forum pushed us and said I think you guys could really get something going here.  We listened to him and went from there.  We ditched the plastic molds and bought aluminum molds.  I am learning new things daily from you guys.  I really do not post on here much because I am still new to pouring and am very self conscious.  If there is something I feel confident about, I will post.  This board is the cream of the crop.  I have not seen people attack each other on here like they do on other boards.  I don’t know anyone personally on here except my business partner.  Like others have said we feel like family on here.  This is such an awesome board and everyone is a class act.  Sorry for getting side tracked.  To answer the question, I pour for three reasons.  One is I like experimenting with new colors and coming up with some cool combos.  Two, I am very passionate about fishing and I like helping people catch fish.  I make sure I am able to catch fish on new lures before I offer them out to people.  Three, it is my escape from the world when I cannot fish.  I work full time in logistics.  I have a wife and three kids with the oldest being 8.  I also have three dogs and seven guinea pigs which require daily attention.  My wife has allergies so I take care of them all.  You can see I am very busy every day.  I usually go out to the garage after I put the kids to bed.  It is my way of unwinding before going to bed.  My oldest daughter likes to hang out with me in the garage while I make lures when she is awake, so it is our time together away from the younger ones.  There you have it now that you all know my life story.  LOL!
