Not trying to say I am near the expert that Jerry is;  but here are some things I have observed while pouring over the years.
Loose heads on jigs can be a function of a cold mold and or low lead temperature.  The lead is solidifying before it "bonds" to the hook real well.
This is typical in smaller weight heads until things get hot enough to get good bonding.  Also; the problem can be in the alloy of the lead if pure soft lead is not used in smaller sized molds.  Hard lead alloys typically give problems in small cavity molds.

This is right on the money... another thing to try is to let the jigs cool a bit longer than usual before removing from the mold, and remove them by the sprue with pliers rather than prying on the hook.  Any jig without a collar can be troublesome like that especially in the smaller sizes.  If all else fails give us a call at Do-It 319-984-6055 and we'll have a shop tech help you get to the bottom of things.

Are you talking about this stand up jig?  because those hooks are a pretty unique hook and I believe they are only available in the sizes shown...

There is a version of that jig with designed for heavier hooks.  Here's a link:

I have a buddy on the Gulf Coast of Alabama that loves that heavier hooked jig for Redfish.

Jerry, I've done well with Owner's Stand Up jig in 1/8th and 1/4 oz.  Not wild about the price!!  Your bait looks like it may be a good replacement. I've poured thousands of the 410/413 hooks and they are sturdy, but I lke the black nickel better (I know it's not as strong)

Question, Do u, will u make stand up molds w/all 1/8 or 1/4 oz heads (or combos of those two sizes) with a wide gap black nickel hook in say 1/0 and 2/0??   thanks

Are you talking about the Owner Ultrahead? (kinda looks like an Erie Jig?)

I'm pretty sure we haven't got exactly what your looking for there... especially in those specific sizes with those specific hook styles and in those specific hook sizes.  This is why you will find that most Do-It molds are assorted sizes designed around affordable hooks.  That way we can keep more people happy with the same design and offer the chance to make various sizes vs. buying 2 or 3 different molds.  Keep in mind that they are all poured in a foundry from a master design, Do-It has and does little if any machining on site.  This enables us to produce $40 molds.

The designs that we have are basically built to make as many people happy as we think we can make happy with a particular mold.  Outside of that I'm afraid you will likely need to modify an existing design (a Dremel or simalar tool works wonders here) or buy a Blank Mold and have it custom machined to your specifications.  Usually custom machining is pretty expensive.  (unless you own your own machine shop or have a buddy that you can bribe into doing it for you)

The fact is that we would love to be able to produce anything, at anytime for anybody, but our production process just won't allow that.  We simply can't be everything to everybody, however we sincerely do appreciate any and all ideas, suggestions, feedback, etc. as our design team is always looking for the next HOT lead mold.  It just takes a lot of time and resources to get it to market.

With all that said (and WOW, I typed it all) Your idea for a Owner type stand up head will go into the "ideas file" as soon as I get back to the office on Monday.  None of your suggestions fall on deaf ears and the design team will be looking at all of them going down the road.

Thanks,

Jerry

It is the Ultrahead from Owner, in 1/8 and 1/4. A wicked jighead...I honestly caught more fish on it than any head I've thrown..it's just the way the bait is suspended off the bottom w/that head..Redfish, Flounder, Trout...everything hit it. One thing, some say they lose too many fish on the short shank...but i didn't experience that, at all. A wide gap hook is a must, bl. nickel I like also.

I believe you have a gravedigger type head...but only in freshwater sizes. Worlds of potential in saltwater!!!! Lot of these fish dig up dinner out the sand!!

Until I get all of your names in my little pea brain you may have to answer to your screen name... (I'm a little slow only some of the time)

@ floridagrimp - I will agree, I totally love the way that Owner head looks and I can only imagine that it fishes well.  I understand your need/want for  black nickle finish and more hook gap.  The particulars like that are important as it needs to be a functional design for sure.  I've a buddy on the Gulf coast of Alabama that swears by the Do-It Stand Up Jig with the heavy hooks for his Redfish.  A heavier hook (saltwater) for the Grave Digger is a stellar idea too, thank you.

@Justin - I appreciate you for being here too.  Guys like you, I and the rest of this bunch is how we're gonna make this Do-It yourself tackle making business better.

I have 18 Do-It molds. I would say that at least five or six of these molds have been modified to accept a larger hook.  A Drimel tool will work wonders!

Oooooh... OK.  I'll agree with you there.  The hooks sizes in that mold are a little small.  I don't know why it was designed that way exactly.  I'm afraid about all I guy can do is modify it to accept a bigger hook, especially if you want to go with the larger wire anyway.

Is this the mold that runs from 1/8 oz to 3/8? Maybe it goes one size bigger. If it is I have one that's been modified to handle a bigger Gammy hook. Let me know and I'll get the hook sizes and numbers for you. It took very little modify it.

Here's a link to the mold that I believe he is talking about:

http://do-itmolds.com/shop/index.php?route=product/category&path=1_7_265

I've a feeling that they were shooting for a bit more of a compact profile with this bait, but the Gamakatsu style 604 hook that it's designed for is a little shorter shanked than most hooks in my opinion, but it IS a good hook.  You might take a look at the new Trokar Football with Screw-Loc...

http://do-itmolds.com/shop/index.php?route=product/category&path=1_7_2091

That is a bigger, heavier hook...  A little spendy, but WOW, it's a sharp son of a gun, and it has a forged back bone that'll tow a truck, not to mention the stand up type design.

You could take a dremel to the and open that mold right up to take a thicker hook. If there is one that fits.
