Minnesota fun
« on: 01/13/13 17:47 UTC »
I just spoke with a good friend from Bemidji, Minnesota. He's located way up at the opposite end of the state on a diagonal and not all the far from Canada. When you turn off the road onto his driveway you go down a slight incline for about 60 yards to his garage and house.  Incline....maybe 10 degrees. The other day it rained up there with temps at about 36 degrees when he went to bed. When he got up the next morning it was -9. Seems the temp shift came while it was still raining. He still cannot get out of his driveway for ice. To go from the house to the garage he has to wear ice cleats. 4 wheel drive has been useless. Now he is rigging up an electric winch/pulley/cable system to pull at least one of the vehicles to the road where the county has done some treating to break up the ice. I ways knew there was a reason I liked where I am at better than up there.

Front wheel drive with a good set of Chains.  I live in the south; but we used to get some really bad Ice storms in South Carolina.  The roads were pure glazed ice.  Nothing but front wheel drive with chains would work.  We were a 24 - 7 / 365  operation so you had to go to work; period.

TPO and I bought a home out in the foothills about 25 years ago.  It had one of those long E Ticket driveways.  A week or two after we moved in her parents came to visit from San Diego.  They stayed for a week.  The day before they were to go home it snowed about 2 feet.  It was a loooong and steep driveway and I was ready for them to go home.  I tried the shovel thing and got nowhere fast.  It was my first experience with clearing a driveway.  Brainstorm...I'll melt it.  Got the hose going and, well, you can figure out the rest.  They left about three days later.

I never claimed to be smart.
Until next time.

Yesterday (Sunday) it was 73 here. Today we have freezing rain and it's 32. One thing about Mississippi, if you don't like the weather, wait a day it'll change.

Sat. & Sunday were lower 70's here.  Last 18 hours went from 68 to 34 and rainy here as well.  Blue funk miserable all day.  Rain with a little sleet mixed in, Yuk.  Still take this over -20 degrees.
