Gill mold? Any suggestions on how?
« on: 01/16/13 21:52 UTC »
I have shot these molds for a week now. Might have 10 baits that don't have indents on both sides of bait near eyes.

I have shot the molds with cool plastic (320), hot plastic (335), hot molds, cold molds, slow inject, fast inject.

Just shot 21 baits and have 3 that are good.

I shoot hundreds of baits a night but these just will not work. Same goes when I use the twinjector. About a 30% or less success rate.

About to give up on these at this point...

Anybody have any clue...

Jim

I didn't have a problem with them when I got em then I shot them the other day again for a buddy and had the same problem your talking about. What I did to fix it was I loosened my clamps seemed like when the were over tightened the air couldn't escape correctly. I also tried injecting slow and holding pressure for a 10 ct but I think the clamps were the main problem. Hope this helps you ghost

Welcome back Jim, sorry your having trouble. The clamp situation may be the culprit, try a little less clamp pressure shooting only one mold by itself and see if it makes a difference.

Hope all is well bud, glad to see the GB logo on the boards again,
Drew

I'm with dreamer good to see the GB logo again.

I have to agree with both of them.  I have fixed this problem with not clamping so hard. And also where I put the clamp. If I have trouble. I start moving the clamps around too.

Hey Jim, good to see ya. Hope all is well.
I agree with these guys on changing up your clamping to see if that helps. Try holding pressure on your injector longer as well. I don't have the gill mold, but I shoot baits in cold weather a lot. I don't pre-heat my molds. I found that holding pressure for a longer count, and running my plastic cool 310-320 really helps with denting. A 20 count usually works well for me.---Tim.

Thanks all. Must be the clamping as I have tried everything else.

I will give it a run tonight. Hope it works as I have lots of interest in this bait.  :-X

If I can get the darn things to shoot, I'll be glad to post up a couple...

Update... Just shot 12 baits. No matter where I put the clamps or how lightly I have them on, I get the dents.

I shot the last set with rubber bands on the molds. I know that is really, realy unsafe but I had to experiment. Got no dents but the little arms will not fill unless I press hard and then the molds spread slightly.

I am at the point with these that if I have to manipulate them so much just to get them to shoot properly, the molds are not worth having.

Should be able to vent them better so that a clamp can be applied as with all other mold and shot.

Before asked, I did warm molds, something I am against. Wanted to see if that would help the arms fill with rubber banding. It did not.

I started mine with cold molds and the first shot the arms didn't fill but after that they filled fine I think the plastic has to be a tad hotter for this mold than others out there in order to fill the appendages

Thanks! I am more concerned that I can not adequately use proper clamping on these molds. Loose or inadaquate clapming for the sake of shooting a mold is unsafe.

Maybe deeper venting or additional vents will resolve issue. After hearing others have the same issue, these probably will have to be sent back. Darn... Bait had promise.

They probably need to be looked at.  I personally clamp them tight and shoot them slow around 350...  With that said, what are you doing different when 1/3 of the baits turn out?

They still have a tiny dent or pocket. Guess I am holding my mouth different. Nothing else changes.

Others commented that they cant clamp either so i guees the clamps close the vents and the air has no where to go but rise to the top of bait and get trapped near eyes and head.

I can reproduce the irregularity on evry bait with my clamps on properly.

Update to the update...  ;D

Spoke with Ryan @ Do-It and they are duplicating my same results with molds on hand. Messing with the venting to get something that will shoot good for us.

Thanks!!!!!
