Things I've learned
« on: 02/05/13 16:44 UTC »
I am very new at this hobby but there are a few things that I have learned along the way that I thought may help other guys that were looking at getting into this.

  1. Think about how you fish and what you fish for. Example: I'm a bass tournament fisherman and most of the time I either am flipping a jig or tossing a shacky head. For me to buy a lizard or tube mold at first would not be wise because I only use maybe a pack a year.

  2. Buy sample packs first. CCM does a great job in selling a sample pack for only $4.99. Pick 5 baits that you think you may like and order them first. Baits may look different in your hand then in the picture. This is much cheaper then paying for the mold first.

  3. Buy CCM plastisol ( phthalate free ) It is the best. Start off with normal. You can always add hardener or softener later.

  4. Yes you need heat stabilizer. Just buy it.

  5. CCM X2 colorant is well worth the money and the best I have found.

  6. If your baits need to be perfect like 412Baitco, Microspoons or ghostbaits  and some others from here then buy them from them. You have years before you get there.

  7. Wear all the safety gear and be in a well vented room.

  8. Never be afraid to ask this forum any questions. They are very willing to give the answers.

  9. Never take your rods out of the rod locker till you get out on the water.

 10. Last of all. If your a bass fisherman like me then 2X Caney Creek Green is the green you have been looking for.

Now don't listen to me and go out and spend your hard earn money like I did. That's the only way your going to learn.

Lol very well put. I like the fact that your first mold should be something that you can use for a lot of your fishing applications it's much cheaper that way to start. As far as samples are concerned most guys will gladly send you samples of the molds they have. We tend to have a lot of stuff around. I know I do. To anyone who checks out this thread and needs any help feel free to message me. I'll pass on any knowledge I've learned here from all these guys. Thanks for the compliment btw but you're putting me in a class with guys who have been doing this way longer then I but I try and that's what makes it fun!

I'll agree 100%... very well put, and possibly the first time I laughed out loud today.

Thanks,

Jerry

I am rather new to this, but it did not take long to see the value in the crystal plastic and the x2 compared to what I had used in the past.

Well thank you but I did forget #11. When you get your first order in get yourself a nice big work space and get everything organized to where you can easily find things as you need them. You might even want to put labels on shelfs where things go. A clean space and knowing where things are will help keep it safe and make you more productive. Then take a picture of it because it's the last time it will ever look like that.

I like #11, that's a very good tip indeed.  I can't wait 'til you come back with #12 cause I'm sure you're gonna discover it sometime soon.

good thread Lamar, thanks.

#12 The microwave is for heating your plastics and not for heating your coffee.

#13 Keep a vase of flowers in your work shop in case your wife walks in and says what's that. Simple hand her the flowers and say these are for you and walk her to the door.

#14 I promise my last. When you finally understand that it's going to take a while before you can do what some others on here can. Then you can slow down and enjoy a pretty cool hobby.

#13 rocks... I'm gonna have to try that one, and you can't stop at 14.  Somehow it just doesn't seem right.

Carry on and bide by #14.  It'll serve you well, but I''m gonna bet #15 and more will come I only hope you share them, pretty cool stuff.

I've learned that...

The 6" Flippin' Stick is an extremely versatile bait, and among several baits from that one mold, that bait makes a Killer SpeedWorm when it's cut right.

The 3.5" Swim Toad is an UnStoppable Craw Imitation when it's applied as a TwinTail Grub-style of Craw.  Craws are usually pretty wide and the Swim Toad imitates that Profile very well, while providing a hook-slot.  Many people throw TwinTail Grubs to imitate Craws, I apply the Swim Toad there.

Great thread Lamar. All sound advice. I take #14 a step further. I quit trying to make works of art a long time ago. It just doesn't interest me. I have quite a few colors that haven't been used in a long time. I too am primarily a bass fisherman. I've found that black&blue, pumpkinseed, and various shades of green are popular for a reason. They catch fish, and for the way I fish they're all I really need the vast majority of the time. The only exception is swimbaits. I make those with open pour molds. That makes laminates a breeze. The K.I.S.S. system works for me. Keep It Simple Stupid. ---Tim.
