Ice Bar
« on: 02/09/13 09:50 UTC »
We're in the midstof our annual communitywise winter celebration here in Rochester. They pretty much have it all for things to do. If you run there's a half-marathon. Ice sculptures abound. Food vendors are everywhere. Like water? They have the "polar plunge" in one of the city's numerous lakes....just hop right off the edge of a huge hole cut in the ice and make the 20' walk to shore and a hot tub. This shin-dig also boasts having the largest bar made entirely of ice in the country.

Kind of amazing watching some of the drinks getting made. They'll pour the booze into the top of a sculpture that funnels the sauce down and out a spout to chill it. I think it runs thru like four feet of piping to get to the glass. And speaking of glass[es], you can order your pet sauce served up in a glass made of ice.

Mr Welch.....you'd love this party in your new hoodie. Ma and I have a basketball game at three this afternoon and then we plan to take a stroll thru the party held in ice. Carole might enjoy a margaurita, but I'll stick to my pepsi....maybe even a hot chocolate.

The cold has numbed the chamber of commerce members brains.
Run a half marathon, then take the polar plunge, and then off to the bar and hot tub.

I was hoping for pics but "someone" left the camera on "on" after "she" took some pics for ebay sales. We just got back home from there and I was a little disappointed. What was claimed to be the biggest ice bar was split up into about 8 different bars, each with a different theme. All in all it was a block long pile of bars built around ice.  What a zoo.

The temps are great for this stuff. Right now at almost 7pm we are still at 30 degrees. Got an east wind at a good clip ahead of some more freezing rain, ice and snow flurries late tonight and all day tomorrow. Still, this was tucked down into a an area where the wind really wasn't a factor.

Part of this is an ice carving competition and what we saw was outstanding art in its own right. Just inside one of the malls along this route was blues band. I'm deaf and use hearing aids much of the time and I could hear this racket a half block before we got to the door. Sure wish it would have been Steppenwolf....Magic Carpet Ride. lol.

Things wind down tomorrow. The dunk was a success I hear as was the marathon. The bar thing is always a hit. Two years ago it was -15 degrees on the Saturday night....the big night....and they still came out in droves. Just Minnesota. The cold doesn't stand in the way of much in this state.
