catfish reels

I'm going to try to drift catfish  this year. I bought 4 zebco ugly stick knock offs for 7.00 on sale lol now I'm looking for some reels. Does anyone have a suggestion? I like abu's and small PENNs but a touch pricey. If anyone has any used stuff laying around they wanna sale I'm up for offers. I'm thinking hard about okumas they are 35 buck new and have a nice T handle on em. Any advice would be great

Shimano!!  Perhaps a little more money, but worth it. I fish saltwater and they hold up!!!
Sedona I believe costs $59 and is a good reel for the money..but the new Symetre 4000 at $99 would be my choice.

I agree about quality and price but they are dang bottom feeders lol I love my Calcutta's for salt water but I'm not risking a monster cat jerking my high dollar stuff over. 50 bucks isn't bad for something that's gonna last

MO, if You're looking for a spinning reel, I have a used Shimano (Sedona, maybe) 400 size that I'll send You for nothing.  Everything I have has been upgraded and this is 1 of the reels sittin' in my shop.

what I dont get is guys will spend 100's on bass gear, 100's on trout, 100's on icefishing, dont give catfish the respect. I'm going with the Abu 6500,s drifting? clickers, spinning Diawa BG60, Shimano Baitrunners. But then again I have custom rods for Catfish  ;D

Dang BKJ I need bait casters because the rods have the trigger on em. I like the universal style rods but they weren't on the sale rack. lol its awesome of you to offer I appreciate it

Oh they have my respect and so does my wife but catfish don't look at the bank account, the wife does  :o the problem is I spend 1,000's on a stupid pan fish lol I have over 20 crappie rods in the boat at all times. I hate to see how much I have in bass stuff and I don't even like em  :P

I love the Calcutta...believe Shimano has a new one out. Believe the Abu 6500 would be a great reel for what ur doing..and it's reasonable and dependable. Catch a few hundred lbs. of catfish and show wife how much money u are saving the family in food costs!!

I wish... the wife has a masters in secondary math education. My crappie cost about 150.00 per pound by her count. I took algebra 3 times in high school so I didn't try to refigure it I just changed the subject

Roger on'nat, MO.  As soon as I posted that I went to the shop and grabbed it, took it apart and lubed everything...workin' like a Champ!  Still solid and smooth.  The lip of the spool needs to be buffed, though, IMO.

I'm a fan of the Calcutta's, myself.  I've read mixed reviews on that new "D", however.  I sure wish I could afford the Conquest 200's ($525-$550)!  If You're REALLY looking for some muscle, check out the Shimano Talica's...the single-speed versions aren't TOO bad priced, $350-$450.  Reading this Thread on Catfishin' makes me glad mine didn't sell!  :D

If you get the right rod holders you don't need to worry about loosing your gear.  Besides, you can use them to spider rig or troll for crappie.  Either long line jigs or crank baits.  A Lot of folks really like the Hi-tek rod holders ( myself included ).  Made not far from me by a tourney crappie fisherman ( he is an engineer ).  He has used input from tournament catfishermen as well in their design and construction.   I have several sets.  I use them for both crappie and catfish.  I have never lost a rod & reel when using them.   Ant good bass reel will work in open water.  Beef up your line some maybe, and your leader and don't use your extra stiff rods.  You need some give.
